Hey, is this true? I was about to comment on the fact that some statement characterizing Islam based on particular branches of this religion can get quite a response from the general Islamic community, but I"ve heard nothing from them condemning the killers of Nick Berg.

Yes, it can be seen on daily-life streets at some daily-life locations. I never asked myself as to why that is.
Now that you come to ask about it, I can with my fast functioning one-cell brain imagine some reasons:
- Taliban Lunatic locations. We all know how women are seen there.
- Culture intertwined with Islamic teachings in typical patriarchal orientated societies. The man must not only provide for everything his household needs. He is also responsible for everything regarding safety and protection.
Women sees her husband, brother, father, other male relative in that light. The men are considered to “take the heat” in crowded streets. I don’t think there is much “oppression” involved in that. It is a cultural infested habit.
Can of course come across as the opposite in Western eyes.
Now that I come to think of it: I never saw one women in my family taking half a step backwards when I show up. They also usually are out of the door first. I also tend to loose them when we go shopping (only one for example where I am supposed to follow them) and must then wait until they choose to show up again. Loaded with things I didn’t tell them to buy.

Just a guess, but I figure that the people who are ranting against Gene Simmons’ comments are the same folk who thought Marlyn Manson was so clever and intellectual in the movie Bowling for Columbine. So, everyone has the right to their opinion, and I’d say Gene Simmons has a few accurate comments in there, mabye not so eloquently put however. 99% of the terrorist are lslamic extremists and women clearly don’t have the same rights as men in that part of the world. Interesting that they had to get a quote from the Australian muslim of the year, who by the way grew up in Australia . Of course she doesn’t “walk behind her husband” - I think Gene was referring to Muslim women in the Middle East. Oh, the outrage! Sheesh.
