It’s the end of an era.
But we’re in the era of the end, so it’s appropriate.
Any chance you could rename MPSIMS while you’re at it? So some newcomer isn’t put off by the implication that their mother’s cancer diagnosis is a mundane and pointless thing?
Like “General Discussions”?
Sure, why not?
General Quips.
That won’t cause any confusion.
A thread about a dead or injured loved one really can’t be called a “quip”.
Add sarcasm tag here.
The point was that the forum would be a new GQ forum. Hence, confusion.
I would not be a fan of renaming MPSIMS. It’s been around forever and gives the place character. And I can’t remember the last time I saw anyone confused by it, or posting in there instead of a more correct forum.
I’ve never been confused by it, but i do find it disconcerting that topics like “someone dear to me just died” end up there. I guess with the old meaning of mundane, relating to the world rather than to spiritual matters, that’s okay?
People who post in GQ/FQ are looking for information and factual answers. People who post in GD are looking for meaningful discussion and debate. People who post in IMHO are looking for opinions or advice. People who post in MPSIMS aren’t looking for any particular kind of response; they’re just sharing stuff they “must share.”
At least, that’s the best explanation I can come up with.
Early in my association with the SDMB, I complained to a mod about how the “mundane pointless” part of the name seemed inappropriate. My recollection of the response was that the name is partly ironic, and partly recognition that one person’s deeply significant topic is another person’s mundane pointless stuff.
Essentially, not to take that part too literally.
All too often, people looking for advice open threads in GQ, even including the term “seeking advice” in the first post.
But those threads get relocated to IMHO where they belong after being reported.
Some folks don’t have a good grasp on the distinction between “fact” and “opinion” (or “advice”, which is a species of opinion). The rest of us can help.
I think part of the confusion has been that it was called “general questions” and the most common sort of general question is seeking advice.

the most common sort of general question is seeking advice.
That’s actually a good insight, and it strongly supports the name change. I guess those of us who’ve been here long enough to internalize the restricted meaning of “general questions” here could lose sight of how general “general” can be.

I think this all the time. In my head it’s going to be Fuck You every time it crosses my mind. I have a very low bar for humor.
