Genius chimp shot by police

Ar eyou sure it doens’t mean " She’s stable, but compalining a lot."

Wouldn’t it be awesome if that’s really what it meant?

stable but critical usually means “so far so good, but one itsy bitsy, teeny weeny wee thing could push patient into the great beyond”.

head and face injuries bleed what seems to be gallons, keeping her blood volume and pressure stable is very, very, dicey. the fact that they have her as stable means they have a bit of a handle on it but that it could go bad really fast.

also i’m figuring the chimp didn’t go to the dentist often and infection control is very dicey as well right now.

i rather surprized they moved her in this condition.

Actually, in the case of Siegfried and Roy, what happened is that some idiotic audience member tried to PET the tiger during the act, and in the ensueing panic, Mantecore tried to carry Roy off of the stage as a mother would her cubs. If he REALLY wanted to attack, he would have gone for the neck.

I would also describe the duo more like zoo trainers than people who keep wild animals as pets. They seem to try and keep their animals in a sanctuary, rather than at home.
Back to the OP-has their been any mention of the animal having his shots?

IIRC, there are no vaccines marketed or formulated or tested on primates. I can’t remember exactly on what vaccination protocol (if any) zoos are, other than basic quarantine, TB testing, and obtaining blood samples to test for infectious diseases. Also, different species can be susceptible to different diseases, or carriers of others.

That said, the above mostly apply to zoo and research facility primates. It is illegal in many places to own these animals, and many vets refuse to see them, due in part to safety concerns.

Any idea what a pet chimp sells for? They can’t be cheap.

[pedantic jackass]

I think you mean “non-human primate” there.

And now we just wait for Guadere to get to smiting.

I heard the 911 call and was horrified. I don’t find monkeys, apes, or chimps in movies or TV to be charming…I’d much rather watch them swinging from the trees in the Amazon and eating figs.

That said, I’ve seen stories on Animal Planets where chimps will go on raids to other clans and cannibalize foreign chimps. They’ll even rip nursing babies away from mothers. I don’t think they can ever be truly domesticated and I hope Travis’ “mom” has a good insurance policy, because I think the Charla should sue her to hell and back again.

I was curious and went to their website. I saw one blog post
http://blog.peta.org/archives/2009/02/rip_travis.php
but no blaming of the victim anywhere. What the blogger does say is that chimpanzees shouldn’t be pets, don’t belong in show business, that Connecticut should have laws banning chimpanzees as pets, and that depictions in the media make people think that chimpanzees are cuddly fun animals when they’re not. It sounds like they are saying the same kind of things that I read at the SDMB.

Evidently, depending on where you look, anywhere around a grand (for a “used” chimp) to a grand and a half or two (with deals on multiple chimps, buying in volume helps).
Maybe as low as 300 for a bargain basement chimp.

Well, in this case they’re right-it wasn’t the chimp’s fault-he was only doing WHAT CHIMPS DO. It would be like blaming a rabid dog for attacking someone. Chimps are viscious. The woman who owned him was a complete dumbass.

Yes, but not evil; just stupid.

Glad to be of help. I think the whole thing is oddly emblematic of how humans are always looking for animals that don’t act like, well, animals.

Where did I say she was evil? (Or was it PETA who said that?)

Peanuts.

PETA thinks everyone with a pet is evil.

But if we could only hear the 9/11 call where super chimp directed the hijackers. They killed him because he knew to much!

As you said, sir.

I forget sometimes the “non-human” part, since my job deals only with “non-human”.

Update on victim. Not exactly encouraging.

It’s all the victim’s fault. She had an new hairdo and the chimp didn’t recognize her.

ETA: PETA doesn’t think dogs, cats, hamsters, or fish should be pets. PETA doesn’t support the Seeing Eye/Hearing Ear dog program. PETA doesn’t suppor thte Vachss dog program training dogs to help victims of child molestation.

PETA is stupid. And evil.
