Genius/Horror ingredient swaps you have made

Yes, it’s a Hellman’s recipe, and pretty good. You add some Parmesan cheese. It’s nice with spaghetti and marinara. I should make it again soon.

A substitution for dill seeds that would have worked is caraway (which is also a typical spice used in sauerkraut.) To me, the flavor is extremely similar, perhaps a bit milder.

Mayo, in general, is great also for anything grilled as part of your marinade or just dry rub. It helps it stick to whatever you’re grilling, gives it a bit of tang, and aids in browning.

A bit of googling shows this article:

So, wait. Your roommate eats an entire tub of sour cream and you’re the one who gets made fun of after all that? (OK, I get that sour cream is another cultured milk product, and we eat yogurt, so why not sour cream, but who the fuck eats a tub of sour cream?)

It’s an honest mistake…

Believe me, he came in for his share of ribbing, too.

I wanted to add cinnamon to my coffee one night, and grabbed the cardamom shaker instead. I was surprised at how good it tasted. I guess coffee and cardamom is a popular combination in Scandinavia.

I was making moussaka once and decided to experiment. Instead of oregano and basil, I added some curry powder to the tomato sauce and bechamel, and a new dish was born: Moussaka Orientale!

In high school we use to go out for ice cream after evening meetings. My go to order was mint chip ice cream with TAB.

Arabic coffee is often made with cardamom (and the Arab place I go to for extra-fine/Turkish-grind coffee will grind it in with the coffee for you.) Interesting about Scandinavian coffee–I did not know that, but I did notice that Scandinavians will sometimes use cardamom in their sweets and it seems to be the only European country that uses the spice in their indigenous cuisine. There’s a fantastic Swedish bakery around here that sells sweet caradmom buns that are to die for.

ETA: Just found this interesting article about Scandinavia’s love of cardamom:

I had a Russian girlfriend who ate sour cream mixed with raisins right out of the tub. It’s actually quite tasty! (Mind you, it was a fairly small tub.)

EDIT: Great article about cardamom. Thank you!

Someone was 100% stoned.

I’ve been making iced tea all summer, and playing around with lemonade making Arnie Palmers of varying proportions. One day I was out of lemonade and tried orange juice instead.

Awful!!

As I first learned it, just instant iced tea and Tang.

Shazaam!

Huh. Basically an Arnold Palmer with Tang instead of lemonade. I can see that working well.

Ran out of white flour while making chocolate chip cookies so I used a mix of white flour and whole-wheat flour. The results were surprising.

The cookie dough had a slight grit but the flavor was more complex and absolutely delicious. It definitely tasted better than the last time when I followed the recipe (I always sample a generous portion of the dough).

Thinking I had made a great discovery I threw them in the oven and ended up with chocolate chip cookies which tasted more like bread than cookies. Not great.
