Would you mind summarizing why?

Yesterday ended before I had a chance to respond to Normal Phase. Now that I know she wasn’t ALE that changes some of my thoughts, but as a PFK I wonder at her goals. I think it depends on her wincondition, but if it was simply to survive to the end of the game, and she thought I was ALE, why didn’t she bomb me?

OK I’m done reading up on nesta. Her day one case against fubbleskag was (minus a few confirmation-bias sort of quibbles) really quite solid. However, pretty much everything else looks like scum. To summarize:

– very tentative (while yet mildly encouraging) against the established bandwagons on townies Astral and gnarlycharlie on day one and day two. Both times there was no comment by nesta at all until the bandwagon was well established. Both times she contributed to the suspicion (with Astral, with meta-ish concerns regarding PIS/setups in other games; with gnarlycharlie, with self-vote is scum or anti-town) without actually voting.

I was very suspicious of Astral on Day 1, but not enough to vote for him after his cop claim. I thought I had found scum in fubbleskag, so I made my case and voted for him.

I find that accusations of PIS, when the subject is as generic as “most games have only one traditional scum team”, come disproportionately from scum. Nesta goes on to ask Astral a series of questions about Night Zero, but they don’t really go anywhere and I’m not sure ever had any chance to.

This was early in Day 1, and I was trying to get a handle on Astral’s claim. I didn’t know what standard SDMB games were like since I hadn’t been following them for a few years, so I was asking what was standard now. I was thinking that if Astral wasn’t really a cop that he might answer whether or not he could do anything on Night 0 incorrectly, and that someone might pick up on that.

This comment is unexceptional except in terms of the pattern mentioned above (late to the party, mild boosting of the established case, but no vote, only questions (which in this case are not followed up on at all: nesta says she was busy and has only one further post on Day Two, near its end, in which she comments negatively on Hirka and votes gnarly, all for reasons established by other people).

This is about my asking why gnarlycharlie was so adamant that he wouldn’t unvote himself. After I asked that he never posted. I thought the self-vote itself was suspicious, and was hoping to see how he defended it. The case against him was convincing, and his disappearing also seemed suspicious to me, so I agreed that he was probably scum so that’s the way I voted.

– day three and four, early contribution to scum hunting disappears entirely. Day three she has a summary of the early claims (calling none out as suspicious, which while undoubtedly fair is also safe), a brief kerfuffle with Astral over the night zero stuff, then votes for TexCat very late in post 1069.

Yes, my scum hunting has been poor. I’ve been approaching this a little too much like I vote in general elections: study the major candidates and evaluate them shortly before it’s time to vote.

(She votes for real after an exchange with MHaye.) I can’t argue much with this vote, obviously, though none of that had anything to do with why I voted for her. (In fact, the comments directly aimed at gnarly were the most genuine thing about her, IMO.)

By the time I had a chance to review Silver Jan’s posts the case was very well established. I pointed out that she had said voting for yourself doesn’t help either team, but then did it herself. This wasn’t the primary reason I was suspicious, but it did help me feel more sure about it.

Finally, a day one comment aimed at gnarly that felt scummy in its own right (post 604):

As with the quasi-PIS argument used against Astral up top, that “in case” is the kind of “scum slip” that scum seem to jump on out of all proportion to townies. Plus, it’s obvious enough what gnarly is saying about Astral, that he is deliberately hedging his bet so as not to bear too much responsibility if and when he contributes to lynching (townie) gnarly. I don’t see any source of confusion for nesta here, so the question looks like fake-townie.

I thought it was a possible scum slip. I was wrong, but gnarlycharlie never responded. I considered it a mark against him.

nesta looks like scum to me – capable of making strong arguments, but mostly avoiding the necessity.

I’ve voted for who I thought was likely to be scum. I tend to be a studious player, wanting to make strong cases, but it takes time I haven’t had. Instead my time has been devoted to reviewing the cases others have made.

I don’t doubt she worked tirelessly to achieve her wincondition. I know that I’m CARS, but she probably didn’t. I think she might have been going after the low hanging fruit, though, which I seem to be.
