Geocities and malfunctioning links

Sometimes when I visit a Geocities page, all links (even in other browsers) malfunction. I click on them and they don’t work. I think this happens when Geocities stalls and I hit “reload”.

Today I was typing a message on this board. I opened another browser to look at the SD People Pages, which is on Geocities. I found the member and went to the member’s photo. The page didn’t load, so I reloaded it. After I saw the picture I went to the original browser to preview my message. The preview button didn’t work. I tried “submit”. No joy. I closed both browsers and started again. When I went to the SD boards I clicked on “Comment on…”. The link changed colour when I clicked it, but I didn’t go anywhere. I had to re-boot the computer to clear the problem.

This is not the first time this has happened, and it’s happened on another computer. What is it about Geocities that causes links to become “unlinked”?

Maybe it just doesn’t like Communicator 4.7?

Are you using Netscape? Specifically, are you using Netscape with Javascript turned on? I’ve had a problem like the one you describe, though in more places than just Geocities- their pages just exacerbate the problem because they have javascript on every page (and malformed, at that, but that’s another topic).

Anyhoo, I eventually traced this problem to pages with Javascript that haven’t loaded completely- it seems to confuse Netscape to no end. You can’t really get rid of the problem entirely except by exiting Netscape (all browsers) and restarting, but you can get hyperlinking functionality back by turning Javascript off in your preferences.
