geographic survey plug in for website.

Is there a premade tool/plug in for doing something like overlaying member location data onto google maps or some similar service.

Example: if I had a list of every member of the sdmb and their zip code, being able to generate a map showing where all the dopers are in the world.

Facebook has something similar in appearance to what I want in its “places I have checked in” map. Preferably with similar zoom function to where you might see a dot marked 100 for 100 people in the Los Angeles area but if you zoom in you see 14 in Anaheim, 14 in Los angeles, 3 in irvine, etc, etc.

Google Earth Pro can import a file of addresses and display the locations. It’s free. See here: https://support.google.com/earth/answer/176685?hl=en

The google maps API should have you covered. It’s free for non commercial purposes.

There’s a ‘mod’ ( an extension ) for vBulletin that opened up a page of the earth at night with shining red crosses for each member in each continent like a constellation. One clicks the ‘Who’s Online’ link.
I used the Vbulletin World Map Plotting System [ using ‘lite’ GEOIP City Database ], but there are others such as Digital Point User Map [ Using Google Maps ] and previously**VBGooglemap Member Edition. **[ Using Google Maps ] and presumably there are more.

The trouble with Google is that one doesn’t know when they are going to drop a service, they are fairly fickle. There was a sweet little mod, Polish, with dozens of tiny flags at the base withdrawn when they junked the translation service.

For WordPress I use a Who’s Online map, ‘GeoLiteCity data created by MaxMind, available from http://www.maxmind.com
However all of these things presuppose you are an admin. As a user how are you going to get the members’ data, and where would you display it ?

There were also vB mods to display countries beside the member list, and Geographic Location Awareness. These had to go when they became security risks. Actually nearly all extensions will eventually be voided on the grounds of ‘Security’. Firefox is now getting rid of the extension system, in a desperate attempt to prove it’s irrelevance.
