Geography Trivia: What’s the closest (in miles) that you have ever been to New Orleans?

… is a good indication that my more-or-less random choice of a place that most Dopers would have been near at some time, is faulty.

Help me decide what other place has a better chance of demonstrating that idea.

Since most Doper are from the U.S., it would make sense that it is an American city. And then it has to be one that has a large population and attracts a lot of tourists. So NYC makes the most sense to me.

My thinking, too.

I’m thinking the mileage distances in the New Orleans poll are too arbitrary, too.

What’s better for the purpose?

– within the city limits
– within the same county
– within 100 miles
– within the same state
– over 500 miles

I welcome improvements for the next poll on whichever place we choose to test.

Well, I have at least been to Chicago, downtown, more than once. The closest I have been to NYC is Newburgh to the north. So I would be in the “same state” category for NYC. But I suspect more Dopers than not have been to NYC at some point in their lives. So I voted for NYC. :slight_smile:

I live in Canada, and I’ve been to Chicago but not New York. I’d like to go to New York some day.

It’s a one-vote poll with an “Other” option for you to list other cities not on the list as being better than New Orleans for a “most Dopers have been there” survey.

If you would like to use the format of the New Orleans poll for more than one city, please do. I’m just of the opinion that my choice of New Orleans was not the best. This poll is to get a sense of what would have been better.

How do I know what city most Dopers have been in or near? All I can answer for is myself. I agree that a multiple-choice poll would have been better.

I have no problem at all with another poll/thread with multiple choice options. Have at, if you want.

In fact, I have no problem with multiple polls on any cities you can think of. The New Orleans one suggests to me that some other city might fare better. That’s all this thread/poll is about.

If being in the airport counts, I’d venture Atlanta. Other than that, I’d say NYC.

You must have heard that old thing about not being able to get into or out of The South without going through Atlanta. That was true when I was a kid on my way to Chicago!

I’ve been in six of the twelve listed, and not just at the airport. But I put NYC as the one I think most Dopers have visited. Did I do good?
