George Lopez didn’t take the cancellation of his show to well, ripping ABC when the announcement was made.
Lopez proved something with his show. That Hispanic people can make sitcoms as dreadfully unfunny and utterly unwatchable as the crappiest shows made by white people. He said TV just got “a lot, lot whiter” as if “white” is some sort of an insult and he is the only alternative. (As an aside Lopez has frequently joked that he loves golf because it gives him the chance to hit something white with a club). I see CBS has a new Hispanic-themed show on it’s schedule so Lopez’s comment seems ill-informed. And lashing out at ABC? The station that gave his lousy, unpopular show five years on the air? The station the airs Ugly Betty? What the?
Yes, that’s exactly it, George. Your shitty show was cancelled because of your ethnic heritage.
Personally, I’m dismayed at Lopez’s racist assumption that cavemen can’t be Latino. I’m pretty sure that there were cave dwellers in Latin America back in the day.
He didn’t say his show got axed because it was ethnic, but he is arguing that it should’ve been kept around for that reason.
Ultimately, even if his show had better ratings than some others ABC kept (his claim, not mine), it was still a long-term economic decision by ABC. If they don’t own the show, they can’t get the same kind of piece of the pie through syndication, etc. that’s possible to generate from something created internally.
I’d be pissed, too, if I had to leave the air before Carlos Mencina, but them’s the breaks.
It’d be funny if ABC replaced him with the Carlos Mencia Show. The act of repalcing him would be funny, definitely not the show. And by George’s logic, he should be ok if that happened, since as long as there’s a Hisapnic show on, he’s happy right- it doesn’t have to be HIS show I assume from his argument.
Then, hell, they should make it a threefer, by replacing it with an updated “I married Dora.” You’d get a Hispanic, a female, *and * piss off the Bush administration by featuring an illegal alien flouting the law.
It’s just dawning on me how crazy his statement is- he bemoans racism when used against him, but is OK with it if it is to his advantage? He’s a bigger dick than I thought.
It looks like four of the CW’s current 12 prime time shows have majority-minority casts (Everybody Hates Chris, Girlfriends, All of Us and The Game) and a fifth show hosted by an African-American woman with a large percentage of ethnic minority participants (America’s Next Top Model).
I watched abouvt five minutes of an episode- its the same as every other generic network sitcom- same dozen tired, rehashed sitcom plots, same telegraphed jokes- same shit, different ethnicity.
I watched maybe the first season and a half (in my defense, I’m obsessive when it comes to television and it is very hard for me to stop watching a show. I watched Jericho and I couldn’t be more thrilled that it got canceled. I hated it.). It is a remarkably unoriginal sitcom with cookie cutter characters. If you don’t watch it, it means you have taste.
I inadvertently watched a couple episodes. I think I had it on because I wanted to be sure I didn’t miss whatever was airing after it. Didn’t it used to be on before Lost?
Anyway, having watched a couple episodes, given the choice between watching Lopez’ show and the cavemen show … I’ll take the cavemen.
