I think Joe Rogan, George Lopez, and even Bill freakin’ Cosby would disagree.
Here’s a link to a prior discussion of Mencia’s originality. The man is a thief.
I think Mencia is a hack who tells stolen stereotypical obvious race realted jokes- e.g. “are you smarter than a fifth grader = are you smarter than a wetback”. Humor is subjective of course, so I can’t knock anyone for finding him funny, but original, groundbreaking, or inventive, he’s not. Comparing him to Chapelle, who I don’t even enjoy that much, is insane.
I always thought Lopez was a very talented stand-up; his sitcom was disappointing to say the least.
And instead of bitching about ABC being supposedly “racist” and possibly wrecking his career, I think he should put the whole thing in perspective:
In an interview, he once said that there were only three Latino sitcom stars: himself, Freddie Prinze, and Desi Arnaz.
Freddie’s show lasted only one season. If he hadn’t committed suicide, it probably would have lasted another season or two, tops. Sorry to say this, but it really was no more than an extension of Prinze’s standup routine.
“I Love Lucy” lasted six seasons. However, Desi Arnaz wasn’t the title star, so the show’s longevity is due more to Lucy and the entire ensemble, along with great plots and dialogue.
“George Lopez” lasted five seasons with crappy scripts, hack plots, weak characters and multiple time slots.
George Lopez should be on his knees THANKING ABC for sticking with him as long as they did instead of kicking his ass to the curb two years ago as they should have! Does he have any idea what an achievement it is to last five seasons on TV? Criminey, a lot of good shows don’t make it that far!
Have fun back on the comedy club circuit, George.
The “Ellen” kiss aired on April 30, 1997. “Will & Grace” premiered on September 21, 1998. That’s quite a cultural shift in a year and a half… from blacklisting an actress because (gasp!) she kissed another woman to putting a show with two gay men in the top 20.
Either that, or Laura Dern wasn’t blacklisted at all but rather faded into obscurity like every other actress in Hollywood over the age of 30. YMMV.
