German face-slapping dance

A cliche in old Warner Brothers cartoons is a German face-flapping dance; whenever a couple of characters start dancing to the sound of an oompah band, one of them starts to slap the face of the other. The face-slapping dance also appeared in National Lampoon’s European Vacation.

My question: is there really a German folk dance where the dancers slap each other’s face?

The Samoans do a sLAP dANCE also, and since Samoa was under german rule… :stuck_out_tongue:

There is a Bavarian folk dance called the Schuhplattler, where male dancers in lederhosen do a series of moves involving slaps, although I don’t ever remember the guys slapping each others’ faces (it’s been years since I saw it performed). If they do, it sure wouldn’t be a hard slap.

Here are a couple of links to short videos so that you can see a bit of what the dance looks like:

The dancers don’t actually slap each other. Alternately, they swing a hand in front of the other’s face. The dancer being “slapped” jerks his head and simultainiously slaps his thigh to make it appear he was actually slapped. Watching well practiced dancers, it can be fairly convincing.
