A while ago I picked up a few random CD’s from an electronics store in Austria, songs in the “Musik aus dem Berg” style. Having listened to them quite a few times and not understanding German, I don’t know anything about them other than I like them. Google couldn’t find me any lyrics. I’m asking the German-speaking Dopers to listen to the following links to YouTubes of the songs and give me a general idea of what they’re about. For instance, were I asking about Michael Jackson’s Billy Jean, I would expect something like “A man discovered he may have fathered a child with a former lover and his ambivalence.” Nothing big.
Oooookay - you will not need just any German Doper for this, you will need a Bavarian Doper.
I just listened to some of the songs and I literally only got single words here and there. I’m a German native speaker by the way - just from the wrong region apparently.
“Ja da fahr’n ma halt nach Dubai” means “Well, let’s go to Dubai then” and “Wenn die Bayern feiern!” is “When Bavarians party” and is apparently about the fun to be had at bavarians parties. :dubious:
In my experience most of the songs from bands like this boil down to “Bavarians are the best, our parties are the best, let’s have fun”. Bavarians being the Texans of Germany and all that. ;)
I don’t know any bavarian dopers on the board but I’m paging musical expert EinsteinsHund now. Maybe he can help.
PS Send me a message if you want me to recommend some Kölsch (Cologne) music with the message “Colognians are the best, our parties are the best, let’s have fun”. :D:D:D
Thanks. Those two title translations help. Cologne you say? Beautiful city, great Christmas markets. I like the little one at Neumarkt better than the one next to the cathedral.
Oh you people, what do you do to me? The Butterfly’s Ghost sent me the link this morning when I even hadn’t my first coffee, and you invite me to this…misery and pain :D.
In short, I can’t help much, I’m not very versed in Bavarian and can’t stand to listen to this a second time. But trust me, that doesn’t matter, the lyrics really never rise above toddler level, and this is true for everything shown in the Musikantenstadl (we like to call it Mutantenstadl, btw., the mutant barn). Shame on you for once again making me feel embarrassed to be German :smack::D.
(Btw., you’ll see from this post that I have strong feelings towards music, and things like that really rile me up. But all’s well, no hard feelings)
In hindsight, my post above sounded much harsher than intended, I didn’t want to spoil anybody’s fun. YMMV and all that, and I meant it light-heartedly. Now carry on with the Bavarian atrocities (dang, I did it again :smack::D).
I’m in a similar situation, having recently discovered the German band Seeed. Thankfully, they release english versions of some of their songs. Some videos have translations in the description or the comments, too.
So, the dialect is actually Austrian, which explains why some Germans are having issues. Working the night shift today, I have nothing better to do at the moment and just noticed that the office firewall seems to have unblocked youtube by mistake. So here goes:
Hoo Ruck! (title comes from “Hau ruck”, which basically means “heave ho”, so something workers would chant while doing something physically taxing together, e.g. heavy lifting or pulling) is about: whenever life presents something difficult, we just go “heave ho” and work through it together, that’s how we manly Austrian guys deal with the hard stuff.
Ja da fahr’n ma halt nach Dubai
We have been all over the world, we have no money but a lot of courage, so now we are going to Dubai and playing our Austrian music for the sheiks, we will take the money they give us to buy oil to take home and get us through the cold Austrian winter…
Wenn die Bayern feiern! (When Bavarians party)
Brazilians have their carnival, Viennese go to the Opera ball, but when Bavarians party, it is a real blast
Hollawax - sorry, the video seems to have been taken down or is not playable in my country.
If you like this type of music, use “Musikantenstadl” as a search term. Also, Hubert von Goisern is an Austrian guy who is doing great contemporary “Volksmusik”.
