Do all liberal Democrats think “following the law” means committing a felony? Or just you?
In jurisdictions where it is illegal to pay for registration, they clearly broke the law. Shame on them.
What they did not do was disenfranchise voters, or cause ineligible people to become registered to vote.
We need a few high-profile prosecutions and PMITA prison terms. That’ll discourage any recidivism by the GOP.
If you think paying people piecework for registrations is worthy of the destruction of an organization, you’re a dumb fuck. Once again, nothing ACORN ever did resulted in a single illegal vote being cast. Breaking a minor rule such as paying per registration can be easily corrected. When you run drives in every state it isn’t terribly surprising that you can get caught unaware of a particular state’s rules. The villification and destruction of this fine organization is a Republican hatchet job.
Honestly, I don’t buy this. If you’re holding a drive, it is your responsibility to know the law. That’s why you exist as an organization, to know the rules and the best way to organize these drives.
Paying piecework for registrations is stupid anyway, all you’re doing is encouraging your part time seasonal workforce to make up registrations so they get paid.
That doesn’t mean this wasn’t all a tempest in a teapot.
You make fair points. It was blown out of all proportion, roughly akin to executing someone for jaywalking. For right wingers to point and wag their fingers and say this amounts to voter fraud really strains credibility.
The left will be fair and do nothing to win.
Didn’t they also point out that it was garbage as they handed it in?
Are you sure its legally required to do so? Because in Florida (and maybe 5 other swing states), they just rip up the ones that say Democrat on them.
I worked with a guy that used to say that the Wall Street Journal agreed with supply side economics (tax cuts will actually increase the tax revenue), it turned out he was talking about their editorials. He’s a smart guy, but he is willing to believe that the moon is make of swiss cheese if it means he will pay less tax.
Well, they got punished by being blown up. The death penalty for a non-profit.
Perhaps we can do the same thing with the RNC and the Republican party of New Mexico since everyone seems to think that ACORN = RNC and NMRP
That’ll be the day.
Like we actually have a “left” in this country.
You are aware, are you not, that ACORN complied entirely with the law at every stage of that business (including turning over all iffy registrations to the elections offices – as required by law – and flagging same as suspicious – as required by law), and that ACORN never was indicted or even investigated for any wrongdoing in connection with it?
And to be fair, a fraudulent register of a voter is a far cry from that said voter showing up to actually vote. I can register my dog to vote, but I dont think the kindly ladies at the polling station will allow him to vote.
Not that I think fraudulent registering isn’t an issue, but there is no correlation between registration fraud and actual voter fraud. Acorn may have registered illegally but that is a far cry from having folks at a polling station in an attempt to turn voters away.
The only left-of-center candidates for POTUS this year are Rocky Anderson of the Justice Party; and Jill Stein of the Green Party; and the usual candidates of various socialist parties. (See here for a complete list of candidates.) They will all be fair, because they have no hope of winning.
Let’s just fucking steal it! Promise a massive voter registration drive with totally trained people. Make getting a voter ID as easy as falling off a log at the same time. Shit, just set up a booth at the Piggly Wiggly. All you need is a picture taking device, an internet connection, and away you go! You register the voter, take the picture, keep one copy on the central database, and send the picture ID to the address given. Bada boom, bada bing, registered voter and picture ID in one swell foop!
Its entirely possible that such a program might bring in tons of non-Republican voters, but that is a sacrifice I am prepared to accept, as stern duty demands. Just that kind of guy, I guess, seize the bull by the tail and face the situation!
And talk about voter confidence! This is one damned voter who will be a whole bunch of confident! I’ll have giggling fits of voter confidence!
What about this line:
True? Or false?
I notice how you bluster and fuss, and call it “breaking a minor rule.”
But in fact, it was a criminal law – a felony.
And ACORN broke it.
So when you said, “ACORN did follow the law,” that was not a correct statement.
Right?
This is the part of Bricker’s Perry Mason fantasy where BobLibDem breaks down on the witness stand and confesses.
No, wait, Hamilton Burger jumps up and yells “Your Honor, the defense is badgering the witness” and Bricker says “Badgers? Badgers? We don’t need no steeeenking badgers!”
Thank you, thank you, I’m here forever, tip your veal, try your waitress…
The only “fantasy” in that exchange that I see is coming from Bob. You know, they guy who is actually makings stuff up.
FIRST: Stop letting the Republiscum divert this post to freaking ACORN. That’s their modus operandi, to get you to stop talking about their scumbag activity and make you defend your side against a false claim. They’re masters at this technique, moving us from our frame to theirs and we must stop falling for it.
This. Exactly.
You’re welcome.
Hell no I don’t owe him an apology. I’d rather not have to call that jackass a jackass, which is precisely why I started this thread in the Elections forum and didn’t make it a rant in the PIT. There’s absolutely nothing ranty about my OP (not even an capitalization by me). The only reason he shoved it over here was so he could watch people attack me. He’s a fucking jerk like that.
LASTLY: Please stop talking about ACORN. This thread isn’t about ACORN. This thread is about the extensive lengths the GOP are going to to steal this election from legitimate, legal voters. Were it left in the Elections forum where it belongs, the hijacks would be impermitted and warned against. Don’t let these fuckers get away with this shit. Thank you.
So, we let them say whatever they want and we don’t snark on them? This is not the way of my people.
No, we do what they do and turn their shit around with a simple rebuttal then an immediate segue back to the actual topic.
And we don’t rebut them by creating a negative that repeats their frame.
ACORN was a legitimate organization that got railroaded by a craven GOP as yet another example of the lengths they’re going to to reduce the number of Democrats who get to vote in this election. The GOP has been plotting these tactics for years, starting with the hyped up lies about an organization they saw as a threat to them, moving on to trumping up lies about non-existent in-person voter impersonation. And finally, for those who fall through the cracks of their attempts to keep Democrats away from the polls, training people on how to disenfranchise Democrats at the polls.
Wash, rinse, repeat.
Don’t let them distract us from the core message; keep repeating ours.
No one is claiming that what the Republicans are doing here isn’t terrible. Fortunately, it’s been discovered and presumably stopped. It still bothers me that the lefties here continue to defend fraud on their side. That’s why ACORN is relevant. You continue to delude yourselves that this is only a problem on one side.
