On politics. We now have a sane President and all that entails. My state legislature “looked” at whats happening at the national level and decided to take up the slack.
They want to impeach the governor, restrict his authority to declare emergencies and then take action to relieve those emergencies, lift any and all restrictions related to covid and rescind the state of emergency for same disease. Oh! That’s not all, there is a movement within the legislature to make all hallucinogenic and psycho-something, tropic, active? drugs (and specifically Marijuana) constitutionally illegal in the state.
I would put this in the pit, but I just don’t have it in me anymore to work up the invective for it.
I’m all out of “WTF” for this kind of stuff, but I can’t just stick my head in the sand about it either.
I love my state, but the majority of the people living here, nah, not so much.
Am I the only one getting utterly burned out on this stuff?
(Yawn.) Remember when the most exciting thing was going to the corner gas station and watching the grease monkeys changing people’s tires?
It seems like several of the state-level Republican parties are fixing to take over the crazy where Trump left off. Arizona is one of them. Are you in Arizona?
It’s ok to take a break. Listen to some music, go for a walk or a hike and take in the air.
You can come back to paying attention when and if you feel the need. I do think the liberals will win the day in the long run, but it’s going to take awhile.
Idaho, we have a few exotics called democrats, but really, this state is so red we’re almost the People’s Republic of Idaho. My state is slowly, steadily, assuredly forcing a state of societal and political stasis whilst the world goes rushing madly and happily into the future of equality etc.
Politics tends to come and go in waves; decade-long cycles where I’m from, and likely longer ones where you are.
Still, it’s easy to get burned out when it’s a succession of outrages, one after the next. When the political pendulum swings too far to the right, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that it will–eventually–swing back.
It will swing back, by and by.
A lot of the nonsense the Republicans are trying aren’t constitutional, or violate something-or-other at the federal level (look how precise I am!) and are movements designed more to rile up their own base than actually achieve political goals.
They may speak of impeaching the governor in your state. They may speak of banning various “special entertainments”. But there’s a far gulf between saying and doing. The speech is just red meat for the dogs.
If they’re smart, they’ll have a moment of sober reflection and assess whether what they’re doing has a chance of success or not. They may test every press release against a focus group, just to measure its impact. Or they may just talk stupid and act stupider.
You may not want to engage in political fights, and it’s especially toxic these days. Trump’s kind of sucked the air out of the room, it’s true, and his huge shadow blotted out a lot of light. The air will come back by and by, and the huge shadow will pass, and there will be less distractions for their sort.
So all I’m saying is maybe disconnect for awhile, keep a stiff upper lip, and when you feel up to it, help the political movement of your choice. This too shall pass, in time.
" Iowa voters are a step closer to being able to vote on whether the Iowa Constitution guarantees a right to an abortion.
The Iowa House approved [House Joint Resolution 5] that would add language to make clear there is no constitutional right to an abortion or requirement for public funding of abortions…
The House resolution starts the process of putting a proposed constitutional amendment in the hands of voters. If the language is approved by the House and Senate this session and again in the 2023-25 session, the amendment could go to the Iowa voters for ratification by a simple majority."
I’d be burned out if I still lived in your neighboring state–you know, the one with the highest percentage of votes for Trump in 2016. Like Wyoming, Idaho got radicalized, and it changed their very nature. You have two choices: stay and be a voice of reason fighting the insanity or get the hell out of Dodge and go someplace where sanity still reigns. If you opt for the former, take breaks and try to team up–virtually, of course, with like-minded folks.
Eight years, minimum, before I can go.
(What? countdown calendars are nothing new)
Oops no, six years, the Vaderling becomes his own sith lord. My GF and I sometimes (often by my standards) talk about moving, possibly to Joe-juh, somewhere in or around Savanah maybe, or going on the road as truck drivers and never coming back. She says it’s better than the Sacramento neighborhood she grew up in and that she’s glad she raised her kids here, but she’s not fond of living here at all.
I’d miss the mountains and desert, but beaches and ocean sunrise or sunset soothes a lot of hurts.
Well now, well well well well well, WELL DRINKS FOR EVERYBODY:beer:
Cause the bars and restaurants are being hit extra hard by the unfair covid restrictions, that are violations of the constitution ya know and none of this stuff is actually proven to be as bad as some people say and even if it was, all those restrictions and masks, they don’t really help anything, it’s just a way to trample your rights
SO PARTY ON DOOD AND BE EXCREMENT TO EACH OTHRR
That’s gotta be frustrating (to say the least) being run by lunkheads who think that alcohol (which I love) is A-OK, and mary jane is the work of the devil. Evolution sure is slow, and sometimes there isn’t enough patience in a human lifetime, which is why moving out is what I’d do. This doesn’t even address the covid safety denial. Holy crap. Stay safe.
Just out of curiosity but is Idaho really serious about putting criminalization of marijuana in its state constitution? I ask this because I live about 12 miles from the Idaho state line and it’s the first I’ve heard of it. In any case, beyond appeasing some hardcore Mormon fundamentalists in the southern part of the state, the whole effort just seems like a waste of time.
Georgia now has two Democratic senators, and the more people like you who move in the better it is going to get.
California is great if you moved here 25 years ago like I did. Too expensive now unless you are working for Google or Facebook.
Yanno, thinking about it, anyone have any experience with living in Baja California?
Really, I’m getting to that age where I just want to sit on my porch in the evening, drink a drink, maybe smoke a little if I so choose, pat the GF on the bottom and not bother, or be bothered by, anyone. A nice warm beach sounds nice, but I’d be happy in the desert or mountains where I grew up too. I’m getting old man! and I want to be able to enjoy it.
I have a conservative friend (not really a Trumper) starting to make noises about moving from Northern CA to Western ID for his retirement, with non-stop complaining about our Governor and overly restrictive gun laws and homeless and tax burdens and, and, and…that does not seem to be a problem up north (according to him). I hear whispers of others like him looking to escape the People’s Republic of Californ-I-A. He enjoys the year-round outdoor activities that Northern CA can offer, and I wonder how he will handle his first winter in the Great NW.
Winters are generally pretty mild here, not socal mild but, not north dakota style either. Erm, we have a pretty visible homeless population here in boise.
Tell him he needs to go to Wyoming, he won’t like it here, people will be rude to him just because he’s from California.
