Getting from ATL to Buckhead, other Atlanta questions

Flying from Newport News, VA to ATL on Saturday morning to visit my sweetie. I’ve never been there before, other than a few brief layovers in the airport. I’ve got to somehow get from the airport to Buckhead station. I’ve been told that I should take MARTA, but am wondering if that would be wise, since I’ll be schlepping two large bags. Is MARTA bag friendly? Where is the MARTA station in the airport located? Price, etc. Is there a line that goes to Buckhead station? Directions would be appreciated.

Alternatively, how much is a taxi?

What is there to do in Atlanta for two gay guys with limited time? We like to shop and visit art museums. We plan on going out to a nightclub on Saturday night, and on Sunday, maybe Stone Mtn. Any “must see” sights in Atlanta that we should know about?

Eric

MARTA is very bag friendly. My wife and I always take the train to the airport. Each car has a large “bag area”. Price: $1.25 each way.

If you’re going to the Buckhead Sation get on the North Springs line. Buckhead is the N7 stop.

From the airport to Buckhead? Not $1.25, I assure you.

I’m assuming when you say “Buckhead Station” you mean the Buckhead MARTA station. MARTA would definitely be the best way to go. Just go to baggage claim and look for the signs directing you to the station (Its’ actually connected to the airport) or ask somebody if you can’t find it. $1.75 one way. Take the north line to North Springs, or the Doraville line and transfer to the North Springs line at Lindbergh Center. Atlanta taxis are expensive, you could expect to pay over $50 for that trip.

I don’t have to transfer at Lindbergh Station if I take the North Springs train? And I do transfer at Lindbergh if I take the Doraville line? Just making sure.

That is correct. If your plane come in prior to 9:00 pm, you may choose which north bound train to ride. After 9:00, only the Doraville is running out of the airport. If you do take the Doraville line, you may want to think about getting picked up at Lenox, as it’s only a short hop from the Buckhead station.

Re: What a gay person can do in Atlanta – Strangely enough, I can be some help here. Pick up a copy of Southern Voice or whatever the name of that little digest-size booklet is – there are literally dozens of gay and gay-friendly places in and around Atlanta, largely near Buckhead and Ansley (which I gather is a short distance north). SoVo is distributed up here, and I find it to be the single best print gay news source around, including The Advocate, so I always try to get a copy to keep up on gay issues.
