Pretty simple, right? I’m assuming the person will also bring the stuff to my door, and there’s a lot of heavy stuff, like a huge bag of cat food and six liters of seltzer. Seems like a tipping situation to me, but I’m not sure.
This is in GQ because I really don’t want to hear anyone’s opinion about whether I should. All I want to know is whether it’s customary here on the east coast (and how much is standard), and if it’s not, whether it would be super weird for me to do it anyway.
I’ve used both WebVan (yes, I invested; :smack: ) and Safeway delivery services.
Safeway’s website states specifically to “Not Tip the Drivers” as that is a “perk”. I’ve always disregarded that advice and tried, but have been rebuffed each time. Such integrity, those drivers!
Unless specifically asked not to do so by the company, tipping delivery people is expected.
I usually tip based on the size of the delivery, but never less than two dollars. If there are a lot of bags, or it’s heavy, give the delivery person a five.
I used Safeway here in California and the poor delivery guy had to shlep up 4 flights of stairs to my kitchen every week for a lousy $10 delivery fee. He/she also steadfastly refused to accept any tip I offered…
