Getting mold off gym bench?

Some time ago I got a second hand little weight bench. It looks a lot like this one. Lots of people buy new and expensive fitness equipment, use them a little and then sell them cheap to clear out some space. Well, I think I found out why this one was so cheap: what I thought was the smell of dust and of the garage it was kept in was apparently some kind of mold.

I cleaned the thing three times, and it’s still smelly, and a little something white keeps growing on the plasticky seat.

That’s annoying. I don’t think I have a lot of options, though - if I don’t find out how to clean the mold up permanently, I will either have to rip and replace the seat cover and the foam, or give up on the thing completely and get rid of it.

Has anyone ever dealt with a similar problem?

I’ve never had your problem, but I can tell you it would be easier and probably less expensive, and maybe faster to just replace the seat than to re-upholster it.

guestchaz, I take it you mean contacting the original manufacturer to find out if they sell the seat as a spare part? Or building my own?

The first could be an idea, if the asking price is reasonable. No hassles, I’d be certain the bits fit together, and so on.

Building a new seat myself - well, it’s doable. I think I have most of the tools I need, and I suppose foam, wood and leatherette, or whatever the plasticky stuff is called, is not that expensive.

I’ll have a think. I’ll try and upload a pic of the damaged bit this evening to see if there are any more good ideas.

oh, well that changes everything if you have the sewing machine and know how. Heck yes, that bit of foam and (probably) fake leather shouldn’t cost much at all. plus no wait. The if the original wood is unaffected by mold, just re-use it. You’ll want to be careful removing the original cover and foam though as those will be your templates for the new if you do the work yourself. There isn’t a store that sells fitness equipment near you? Might be able to get a new seat from them if there is. and they have a service department (I’m thinking a place that services and repairs the machines in a gym).

when I worked in a cut and sew shop we called it “boat topping”
