getting rid of green arrow (XP)

no not the superhero (though thats all I get when I google)

Recently an annoying up green arrow appears (in just the active window) that points to the cursor position in a text box. Not all applications it does this (e.g. IE, Word, yes, firefox no). I suspect my kids have played around with a control panel or its some update

Try this: go to Control Panel, open the mouse control, go to the Pointers tab, highllight Text Select, click the Use Default button.

(I’m working in Vista, but I guess XP is the same)

I found out that it was a due to a hot key programme (comfort keys) - easily fixed thanks
