I haven’t taken care of my teeth as well as I should, so there’s wearing away of the bone at the molars that’s apparently more advanced than it should be at my age. My dentist recommended a SonicCare toothbrush to really get those back parts clean.
Well, I’m having trouble getting used to it (although I have only used it twice now). It feels really uncomfortable, especially when brushing my front teeth (making my teeth vibrate), when the brush head accidentally touches any part of my mouth, and making sure that toothpaste mist doesn’t fly all over my bathroom when I open my mouth while brushing. This discomfort is especially relevant because it makes it hard for me to brush properly according to the instructions and make sure that I brush every surface (although maybe the way this model works gives me more room for error).
What’s everyone else’s experience with the modern electric brush? How long will it take me to get used to it?
I got mine about 12 years ago, as I recall it took me about 2-3 weeks to get used to it. I remember my teeth felt like I had braces on again. They were pretty sore. When that happened, I remember a friend had said almost exactly the same thing. Also, the feeling of your head/eyes vibrating either goes away or you get used to it quickly enough that I don’t notice it at all.
As for splattering toothpaste everywhere, never, ever, ever, turn it on when it’s not in your mouth. Put it in your mouth, then turn it on, turn it off then take it our of your mouth. You can turn it back on when you’re rinsing it off, put if it turns on anywhere else it’s going to make a mess. My last one would very briefly pause and beep every 30 seconds. If I happened to stop it right during one of those pauses it would ‘ignore’ the fact that I turned it off and turn back on a quarter second later, that was always good for a little bit of panicking.
My new one took me a few days to figure out I have to push the power button twice to turn it off.
Sonicares don’t have rotating or reciprocating heads. They have vibrating heads. You’re still right in that you shouldn’t push down. If you push down too hard you’ll dampen the motion and jackhammer the bristles into your gums.
Yes, as others are saying, stick with it and don’t press. It takes a few weeks to get used to the tickly sensation, and the vibrator does all the work.
I’ve been using mine for about 3 years and every now and then I forget the rules (usually when my nose is plugged up) and take it a little bit out of my mouth while running. I figure that toothpaste spray is just helping me shine up the faucet. As for the buzzing/vibrating sensation, I would say you get used to it but it never disappears. On the plus side, though, I have never had such an easy time of it at the regular teeth cleaning at the dentist’s office. The thing really works.
