So one of my dearly beloved cousins and her girlfriend got married last summer in an extra-legal but nonetheless touching ceremony. So they already had a full-on “wedding” with a registry, etc.
But they live in Berkeley, so when San Francisco started issuing SSM licenses, they trundled on over to get one, but showed up on the first weekend and couldn’t get in due to the long lines. (They instead spent a lovely day hanging around cheering on other couples and so forth.) Anyhow, they’ve now gotten themselves an appointment for next Thursday, which will be followed by a dinner in the Castro district, and a screening of the Sing-a-Long Wizard of Oz.
(That’s right, straight boy Max, his lesbian cousins, and a bunch of queer activists at the Sing-a-Long Wizard of Oz… this could get ugly…)
Anyhow, I’ve already gotten them a “wedding present” in the traditional sense, but I was trying to think of some wacky but meaningful item to get them for this event… so far, the leading candidate is to get printed up a T-shirt which says something like:
"I got a legal lesbian marriage in San Francisco, and all I got was:
(in small type)
-The right to…
-The power of attorney for…
-(etc. a long list of benefits of legal marriage)
-(perhaps mix in “Something to freak out fundies with” and similar things)
-(or perhaps more sentimental things like “a sexy woman to sleep with for the rest of my life”)
(and then in much bigger type)
-AND THIS LOUSY T-SHIRT"
