Gilbert Gottfried has passed away {April 12, 2022}

Is this a whoosh? What role was he in Scrooged?

I wonder if @carrps has Gottfried confused with Bobcat Goldthwait?

Could be, or David Johansen? Probably not Billy Murray…

As a regular listener to his podcast I had a vibe something was up as the were rerunning a lot of older episodes as “encore” episodes for the last few months. Still heartbreaking.

One of my favorite jokes:
So I was having lunch today with Charles Manson and he turned to me and said, “Is it hot in here or am I crazy?”

Dammit! Blame old brain. It was the weird voice that got my wires crossed.

This one hit me hard. I was a fan since the 80s, when virtually everyone else I knew found him unlistenable, and I just thought he was brilliant. He loved being offensive, but without Lenny Bruce’s chip on the shoulder – there was something good-natured about him even as the things he was saying were completely beyond the pale that made everything that much funnier. (It didn’t hurt that he’d always take the piss out of himself before anyone else.) Being offensive or shocking is easy – being likable at the same time is a very difficult skill. Everyone is testifying to what a friendly and amiable person he was offstage, and I believe it; I actually feel like I knew it already.

And I want to post another vote for his podcast – by unhappy coincidence, I just came upon it a few weeks ago and have been diving in ever since. His knowledge and love for old movies and TV was both formidable and infectious, and he has (had) a fan’s enthusiasm when talking to his guests that’s fun to hear.

Wait til you hear him “sing” MacArthur Park to songwriter Jimmy Webb.

Comedy radio has been playing a lot of his routines and roasts.

He was famously frugal, ordering five meals at clubs and wrapping what he couldn’t eat in tinfoil. He preferred taking the Megabus when travelling and was friends with many of the drivers.

Stolen from Twitter: Gottfried died like he lived his life, with people saying “too soon”.

I just caught this reddit post & video:

A few months ago I was having a particularly rough day and was thinking about Bob Saget and Norm Macdonald’s passings. I bought a Cameo from Gilbert and asked if he would share some stories. Originally, I didn’t plan to share the video… but I’m hoping it will make someone’s day a little better. RIP

I think he looks a lot like Obama with this narrow screen.

A wonderful clip of Gilbert from Hollywood Squares. “You fool!!!”

That’s very funnny.

I started with the Gilbert and Richard Donner podcast. I’m enjoying it. Great stories about actors in Superman and Lethal Weapon.

The mention of Superman reminds me of his role as Mister Mxyzptlk in a couple episodes of Superman: The Animated Series.

He also played the villain Nik Nak in the live action Superboy series.

His 16 year old daughter made a little 8 minute documentary about his love of drawing masks.

Gottfried’s art reminds me of Slug Signorino’s a bit. Something about the inking, and the eyes on the masks.
