That has apperantly been how the creator always wanted to end things. Now, that said, it’s shaping up to be a hit and might continue on. But it’s not supposed to. Money sometimes changes people’s mind about that sort of thing.
Mae Whitman, Lauren Graham’s daughter on Parenthood, was the donut girl.
I’m feeling like I missed an inside joke or 12, since I never saw Parenthood or Bunheads. Was this series used as a reunion vehicle? I don’t know if being in on that would have changed my opinion.
Upon reflection, I think my overall impression is that someone was trying too hard. Too much felt forced. Lest I come across as totally negative, there were a number of things that I liked. Still, I’ve have been fine if this series had never been made - I was OK with the way the regular series ended.
It did strike me that absolutely no references were made to Rory’s first job in candidate Obama’s press corps - not even in passing.
Finished watching today, and I really have mixed feelings. Some of it was so far over the top like the play and Rory’s dream sequence. I thought the play was a scream although not necessary, but the dream, I just didn’t get it. For the most part, I enjoyed it, but I thought there would be closure and the ending just sort of left it as a cliffhanger. I’m left with what happens now instead of, so that’s how it ends.
Didn’t she leave the show by choice? It seems like they wanted stuff the network wasn’t willing to give. The network wanted a status quo of a season to season contract and they wanted more stability for themselves (and a lighter work load) and a bigger budget.
Her leaving was her choice.
Like I’ve said since that time, they lost touch with their own show. They were writing Season 1 versions of the characters way into seasons 5 and 6.
She left the show by choice because the network was forcing the show to go I a direction she didn’t like is what I heard. Even if she left for contract reasons she wasn’t quite about the show not ending the way she wanted. For better or worse this is her trying to end the show her way.
Just watched the last one. I really liked Emily’s arc.
Made it all the way through this weekend, and mostly enjoyed it. I’m not sure if we’re still spoilering, so thoughts are below.
Some of the “returns” seemed a little forced, and I was sorry not to see more general town shenanigans. I agree that it seemed like Lane deserved more out of this (though I will admit to loving the fan-service “There’s my dad” line). I understand that getting Sookie back for more than a scene or two was unlikely, due to Melissa McCarthy’s schedule, but it felt like we could have at least had more than ninety seconds of Jackson, right? It wasn’t until he came onscreen in “Fall” that I realized I hadn’t seen Christopher yet, and I didn’t miss him. I also felt that his scene didn’t add anything to the story, but I suppose they couldn’t leave him out.
Emily’s story arc was wonderful, even when she was being somewhat insufferable. It was just a beautiful journey through grief and out the other side into acceptance. I felt Lorelai’s and Rory’s arcs were not quite as cohesive or straightforward, but I didn’t dislike it.
As for the final four words, I always thought that they would be
“Her name is Lorelai,” after Rory gave birth to a daughter.
I guess I was kinda close.
So my experience with Gilmore Girls is that an ex of mine loved the show and it was about the only one we could agree on to watch together because I liked it at first.
Then, I don’t know what happened, but the “let’s talk 1000 miles per hour/Murphy Brown on crack” references drove me insane and I just couldn’t do it anymore.
That being said I do know the characters and their histories and all well enough.
I read the 4 words
Is Rory married?
To the spoiler question, no. And things didn’t exactly pan out the way she expected in other respects either.
It did sort of have a meaning, in that
Rory, raised by her mother, is now facing the possibility of being a single mother too. I think that when talking to Christopher she was making up her mind about what to do about her baby and Logan(?), whether it’s better to go the way her mom did or try to have her kid’s father more involved in her kid’s life.
This was my take. In fact I thought that scene was so obviously a setup for the end I have been surprised by how few other people ended up seeing that. I thought it totally telegraphed the ending.
Also, I would take away the ?. There is no one else it could possibly be.
Well it could have been the wookie.
You’re right, and while I didn’t think of it while watching the show, I did think of it shortly after posting. At the time, it seemed to me to be far more baiting of Christopher than anything else. But thinking about it again and knowing what’s coming, you’re absolutely right.
Small possibility that it was the Wookiee, but even if Rory’s one-night-stand was at the extreme end of spring and the wedding at the very beginning of fall, I still find it hard to believe that she would get to be four months pregnant without telling Lorelai. Smaller possibility that she and Jess had a quickie somewhere in his first visit to her at the Gazette, but not entirely out of the question. Smart money is on Logan.
Agreed. I think she found out about the pregnancy in the Kiefer Sutherland scene when she got the unexplained phone call and then we see her with Christopher. This is right after the goodbye night in New Hampshire with Logan. If you watch that scene with Christopher assuming that she’s pregnant it seems like she is trying to get Chris to help her figure out what to say to Logan, without actually telling anyone she is pregnant yet. I can’t see her going more than a week or so without telling her mom. Also, it’s makes more sense in a “complete the circle” way. Jess is her Luke, Logan is her Christopher. They keep things open with Jess so that years later she and he can fulfill that part of the prophesy too, or whatever.
Honestly I think all the stuff with Logan always blew and wish his character and all the subsequent plot lines didn’t exist. They do make Rory more interesting though. She’s not a wonderkind, she’s a fuckup like her mom. She spends years as some rich guy’s mistress. She blows a shot at a real job because she thinks she’s too good for it, and by the time she get’s around to actually trying to get it she is so unprepared for the interview that she can’t answer the basic formality interview questions. She ends up taking an unpaid job in town and living off her Grandparents money and probably a lot of money from the Huntzbergers. It’s a dark undertone for a light show.
Also, since I’m in the spoiler tag anyway…what the heck happened with them dropping the story about lines. Before she slept with the Wookie it seemed like that was going somewhere. Then she has a one night stand and she gives up?
I know that Rory had her fair share of guys, but this seems pretty out of character for her, no? To go sleeping around like that?
Also, her predicament doesn’t really speak too well of Lorlei does it? Raised this super-smart girl who had the whole world in front of her (and really did some good things with herself!) but just ends up n the same boat as her at the end of the day? From a poetic standpoint it’s good, but she kinda failed Rory as a mother IMO
I always felt like Lorelai saw herself more as a friend to Rory than a mother. Personally, I thought she mostly abdicated her responsibilities as a parent. Every time I hear someone say “My <parent>/<child> is my best friend” I shudder a little. I have a good relationship with my mother, but I never considered her to be a friend. Same with my daughter. Maybe I’m the weird one…
Anyway, I definitely wouldn’t put Lorelai up for Mother of the Year.
I agree, it seemed out of character for Rory, idk if I can say Lorelei failed as a mother. Rory is an adult and is responsible for her own actions.
Yes, Rory is an adult, but her formative years were spent with a mother who, as far as I’m concerned, wasn’t interested in being a mother. Of course, it’s not like Lorelai had much of a role model for the job.
Yes, you make 2 very good points. It always made me crazy how Emily always seemed to be criticizing Lorelei (original series.) She screwed up a lot but, give her credit, she had a good job and raised a child who often appeared more mature than she was. Which brings us back to the original thought, it just did not seem like Rory’s behavior.
