One of my oldest clients (account age, not person’s age!) is a woman I’ll call Lily who lives in DC. She runs a skin care spa that does primarily waxing and massage. It’s a legitimate day spa, so get your mind out of the gutter! Anyway, I’ve been doing her websites and graphic design (magazine ads, etc) for years. She emailed me today to add a new service to her site: eyelash extensions. I’d never heard of such a thing, but apparently they individually glue fake eyelashes to each of your real eyelashes, and it lasts for up to 2 months. You don’t need mascara and the lashes look amazing from the photos I’ve seen.
Now I don’t give a crap about getting this done to myself. Lily told me that she thought I should get the training done to be able to do this myself. She says her girl makes about $3,000/week doing them (at $300-500 a pop initially, then less for the “refills” every couple of months).
The training is in DC in October, and costs a little bit shy of $500. Then the kit with all the materials and tools is another $460, but lasts for about 200 clients, then you just buy refills of individual items as needed. So we’re looking at an investment of about $1,000 plus travel to DC (but I just moved from there so visiting would be nice anyway, plus Dominic could see his dad). A lot of money if it doesn’t pan out, but well worth it if I made even a fraction of the money her girl is making. I’m currently a full time student and working as a student aide at the college 12 hours a week at $5.50. I need da money.
So what can you tell me about these lashes? Are people wanting them? Have you heard of them? Would you get them done or do you know people who would (note, I’m not drumming you up for potential business, I’m just trying to guage the market!)?
