Gina Carano is ignorant AF, but cancel culture is really getting ridiculous

Yeah? What part did I get wrong? Did you use Bing instead?

God, no. We aren’t savages.

Maybe we could form a movement to start calling it “right-wing idjit prop”…

Their guy lost.

Really, I think for many that’s it - they lost, and that’s inconceivable, so the other side must have cheated.

Right, and that’s sooo crazy.

When Trump started talking about a stolen election, initially it was amusing to me, I’ll admit. Because he was harping on that line before the election, and the midterms and the previous presidential election. It was so obviously baseless and Trump being a sore loser.
I didn’t dream for a moment, despite all we’ve been through, that anyone would take such claims seriously, let alone get angry about it. Let alone storm the capitol.

It’s so amazing where the GOP and right-wing media is right now. Yet some people still want to claim it’s a “both sides” thing.

To the extent that we get self-identified conservatives/Republicans showing up in threads like these and wagging their fingers about liberals “canceling” Gina Carano for persistently spreading offensive lying bullshit about “stolen elections”, while the majority of their own party is going all-out to “cancel” their fellow Republicans for NOT spreading offensive lying bullshit about “stolen elections”.

Are you a Republican and/or conservative? Are you going on Facebook and Parler and urging your fellow conservatives to stop believing outright lies about election fraud and other Trumpist delusions? Are you writing to your Republican elected officials and telling them they need to speak out against these lies and delusions? When you do, what happens to you?

Conservatives whining about liberal “cancel culture” need to take the goddamn log out of their own eye first.

It wasn’t “cancel culture” it was money. The corporate overlords were afraid she was becoming a major distraction that could hurt their bottom line.

Sure, but undeniably it was mainstream dislike and outrage about Carano’s offensive lying bullshit that made her a potential liability in the first place.

Surprise, if you publicly do a bunch of stupid lying hateful shit, and you are part of the public face of a company whose whole product line is based on heroic narratives of defeating evil villains who do stupid lying hateful shit, guess what’s gonna happen to you?

True, but if she kept quiet about her beliefs she’d still have a job. Look at Rosario Dawson. She had some issues in the past, but kept quiet and kept her job. Again the main thing is will they damage the inflow of money.

I’ve been expecting it ever since Trump took his ride down the escalator. There were so many signs along the way … encouraging attacks on counter-protesters and journalists at his rallies … his goons threatening Republican delegates in Cleveland if they tried to block a Trump nomination … his refusal to say in the debates with Clinton whether he would accept a loss … He and his people have been telling us this every step of the way. Why is any of it a surprise?

I believe that many of the people who are surprised by this are likely white people who never quite learned to take seriously the extremism of fellow white people. This Slate article puts it in the context of mainstream journalism’s whiteness causing it to be blind to the actual dangers of white supremacism and Trumpism.

Again, Trump making such a claim was very obviously going to happen. In fact, it’s not a “going to” since he essentially talked about fraudulent elections before and throughout his entire presidency.

What I was surprised by was a non-negligible number of people taking such claims seriously. Within a year of Trump being president, even his most hardcore supporters would concede that he made up a lot of stuff. They just tried to handwave it with nonsense like “take him seriously not literally” and people saying they didn’t like his tweets but agreed with his policies (yeah, I know: his policies and words were equally ignorant, but anyway that’s what his supporters would say).

So yeah, I was personally taken a little off guard in the end by his supporters buying so strongly into a very obviously false tall story. Heck they still believe it now, despite all that’s happened.

Incidentally, I’m not white.

What are we talking about with respect to Dawson? Was it the lawsuit claiming that she and her family had assaulted a transgender employee? If that’s the one, then it isn’t so much that Dawson kept quiet but that the claims were dropped without settlement and Dawson is saying that the assault and discrimination didn’t happen. At least that’s what I gather. If so, that’s quite different from just keeping one’s beliefs to oneself.

Or was there some other matter involving Dawson?

You didn’t take these claims seriously because you value facts and unbiased information. We all have a filter, but some people are more dependent on that filter and depend on facts that support their assumptions and worldview.

This is very true, I believe. White reporters also fail to realize that there is a historic double standard in terms of how many of our most sacred principles have been applied and don’t recognize the dangers when they’re misapplied. A case in point is how the media - perhaps with good intentions - tried to be ‘fair’ with Republicans and take Democrats to task for…reasons. They’ve been treating the Republican party as a legitimate ideological moral equal to the Democratic party and I think that in doing so try to critique Democrats and try not to overdo it with too much criticism of Republicans. They try to give them equal time on TV news segments. The Republicans don’t have that right anymore, IMO. They should not be given equal time or ‘equal’ treatment; they should be treated worse. They should be treated with scorn and skepticism - any party that tries to disenfranchise tens of millions of voters doesn’t need fairness; they need exposure.

Wow, really? Because my experience is pretty much the opposite; just about all the natural-remedy-and-weird-food people I’ve ever had dealings with (actually quite a few) were either flat-out hippies, Newagers, or denizens of Berkeley.

Except, of course, for that one Seventh-Day Adventist family who lived down the holler from us when I was little.

I’ve seen suckers on both sides of the political spectrum. I know this isn’t exactly the same thing but if you look at the anti-vaccination movement, one of the most prominent vaxxers is none other than very progressive RFK Jr. I mean, he’s in Alex Jones territory with some of his nonsense.

Oh yeah, really. Maybe it’s a recent phenomenon but those natural remedies are HUGE in right wing circles. Don’t trust what the government (FDA/CDC) tell you, don’t trust what comes out of the left-dominated universities (including medical schools and other places where scientific research is done). Instead put your faith in people like Dr. Oz (who is all over Fox News and did work with the Trump administration). David “Avocado” Wolfe, raw food advocate, anti-vaxxer, skeptic about gravity (yes really), he spoke at a pro-Trump and pro-Qanon rally with the likes of Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Matt Gaetz. Right wing nutjob Alex Jones (who loves to harass the parents of murdered kids) sells fake medicine containing colloidal silver which has no medical benefit (and he even claims it will “cure” COVID).

There’s a disturbing nexus of organic food and white supremacists: One of the Capitol rioters asked to be served only organic food in jail. It’s not just a weird personal quirk.

I’m not sure the embrace of crackpot “alternative” medical bullshit can be used as a marker for left/right tendencies.

Around here (New York City) it’s the lefties. Park Slope liberals were among the first anti-vaxxers, to the point where measles started becoming a problem in the city. Crystal crap and Gwyneth Paltrow nonsense sell well.

I don’t think they’d go for hydroxychoroquine, because that’s so strongly associated with Trumpism. But they might well refuse the vaccine.

You won’t find a traditional Chinese medicine practioner or an herbalist in any of the Trump-voting blue collar neighborhoods of the city (or in the Trump-voting ultra-Orthoodox neighborhoods, but that’s a whole 'nother thing).

But you will in Park Slope, or on the Upper West Side.

Afterthought: I wonder if lefties go for different kinds of woo than wingnuts?

Your typical new agey lefty (like Marianne Williamson) would never go for hydroxychloroquine. And probably not the colloidal silver stuff, either But your Ford F150 driving, MAGA hat-wearing QANON follower would probably never go for crystals.

Would be interesting to look into. But that’s another thread.
