Girl Effect?

I’ve been seeing ads on a lot of the sites I visit for something called GirlEffect.org. The ad features a big G and the tagline “Change begins with a girl”. The ad constantly tries to download something to my computer but IE stops it.

Does anyone know what Girl Effect is or what it’s trying to download to my computer?

I thought it was girl scouts, but I found this on the net:

“Girl Effect is a philanthropic initiative headed by the by Nike Foundation, and that encourages us to affect change in the world by starting with helping one girl to change her life.”

No idea what it’s trying to download, unless it’s just some advertising BS.

Judging from the website, it’s some sort of Nike-funded movement to educate people about young girls affected by poverty. Apparently, reading the PDFs on that site and taking action will save the world. Good luck.

I wasn’t asked to download anything when I went to the site, but I did get a long and annoying flash slideshow forced on me. I spent a few minutes there and got bored.

Here’s the factsheet (Google docs) and a call to action (PDF).

Nike needs to hire grammar girl:
Grammar Girl: Effect Versus Affect

So who is the one girl?

We all just called her Nancy.

It sounds like “save the cheerleader, save the world” from Heroes.

Nancy’s no fun, she fell right over.

That was Eileen.

Perhaps change is already happening, and they seek to guide its direction. Yeah, yeah, that must be it.

They probably don’t have this in mind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuLj5_lPt4c
