Girls Week Out at the Beach: An MMP

Hello everyone.

I’m glad to see that ems’ Dad is doing well. Also hugs to those that are not feeling well or are feeling blue.

Today was a crappy and annoying day. I came to work today to discover my 'puter would not boot up. Nothing I tried worked; so I called the help desk. I explained the problem and the gal said it sounded like my hard drive was corrupted or fried.  She said she’d submit the work order which pages the tech and one would be up in the morning.

Guess what, no tech ALL morning. I was bored out of my ever-lovin’ mind. I went through all my paper files, I wiped down my desk, and read books on Access, Excel, and VBA.

After lunch, I read some more manuals. They are damn boring and I was chomping at the bit to do something productive. Finally, around 2:00 a tech showed up. He did the same stuff I did, and went down to get a new hard drive. About an hour later, he showed up again, and that hard drive was screwed up, so he went to get yet another hard drive. He showed up again, and…my computer did the same stuff it did in the morning. Grrrreeeeeaaaaaaaaattttt.

So, in the morning he’s taking my whole computer upstairs to be worked on, and I’ll still be sitting on my hands or twiddling my thumbs. In the meantime, my boss sent an e-mail to the automation management chief to ask if he could move me up the priority list (like TOMORROW) for my new notebook computer. I sure hope he does, because I cannot stand not being able to be productive at work.

Even though it wasn’t my fault, I still felt incredibly guilty and like I was being a bad employee because I wasn’t working.

In other bad news, my mother got in accident yesterday. She isn’t hurt, so that’s a good thing. Some woman got into a left turn lane, then changed her mind and moved back over to the through lane. My mother came up behind and then went into the left hand turn lane. Next, the lady who was in the through lane proceeded to turn left…RIGHT into my mother’s passenger side doors.

The cop who eventually showed up did not issue tickets to either my mother or the woman who hit her. The woman has a dent in her bumper; my mother needs both of her passenger doors replaced, entirely.

Today, my mother found out the woman is disputing the claim and the accident.

Oddly enough, my mother had seen her at a discount clothing store just before the accident trying to get a discount on clothes. Additionally, she gave my mother an out of state address, yet told the cop she lived here locally. More :dubious: :dubious:

So, my mother is frazzled. I told my mother not to worry. The pictures of her car (taken by the adjuster at the dealership her insurance company sent her to) will show who was at fault. Besides, that’s what insurance is for.

MT, I just *knew * you would like that ice cream.

You lucked out with the weather. It’s rainy, windy and dreary here.

Well, my son needs to use this computer create a PowerPoint presentation.

SCL, :D. . .those posts were great! You had me going there. I thought the first one was serious. I thought it was just spectacularly non-sequitur and MMP-ish, but I had no idea intoxicants were involved. Next time, I’ll try to keep that in mind.

Mork, thanks for the picture. Very nice! But things can’t be that bad. Smile some.

Thirded.

Dotty, I don’t think you’re getting the concept. It’s supposed to be a sarcastic thing. You’re not supposed to make us actually envy you. Grumble, grumble, mumble, mumble.

Lili, sorry to hear about the debit card.

You must be doing something right. Feel free to share your secrets to the good life.

Sunday?! That’s (counting on fingers) 5 days from now!! I hope you get some personal time soon.
And btw, it’s really quiet in room 304. . . I’m just sitting here all by myself. . . meditating.

That’s golden. Are these college students? :dubious:

Taters, sorry to hear about your mom’s accident but glad to hear she’s OK.
Looking back over the post, I think I used the week’s allotment of smilies tonight. It’s been that kind of day. Quite a good day actually, and now I’m off to bed.

Dotty, I can’t keep up with the children’s songs. I just don’t know that many. Sorry. But at least this one has a lullaby in it. And I seem to be on a Loggins and Messina kick. So here’s your song for tonight. I hope you’re having a great morning.

Love Song
[Kenny Loggins]There’s a wren in a willow wood
Flies so high, sings so good
And he brings to you, what he sings to you
And the love in his lullaby
Seems to tell me if I try
I could fly for you
Lover I wanna try for you cause

I wanna sing you a love song
I wanna rock you in my arms all night long
I wanna get to know you
I wanna show you the peaceful feeling of my home

Summer thunder on moon-bright days
Northern lights in the sky’s ablaze
I’ll bring to you, if you let me sing to you
Silver wings in a fiery sky
Show the trail of our love and
I wanna sing to you, love is what I bring to you
I wanna sing to you[/Kenny Loggins]
Good night and good morning people!!

Morning all! Hi Roo!! ::waving madly::

Sorry - I didn’t realise snuggling on the sofa with my husband was something you would actually want to do!!!

Lili, losing your debit card is a monumental pain in the tuchus. But look on the bright side - at least it wasn’t your whole wallet!

Taters, I’m glad your Mom’s okay - what a crappy thing to happen!

Nooner, I hope Sunday comes soon enough for you. In the meantime, maybe you should take up Roo’s offer of some quiet time in Room 304. ::snerk::

mmmmmm, I am so glad to hear your Dad is up and on his feet. Hopefully, he will settle back in at home without too many problems.

I am soooo fed up with Ramadan. At least it’s only another 10 days now until Eid al Fitr - I can’t wait!

I have another interview this morning, with another law firm that I don’t really want to work at, but anything would be better than the shite I put up with at my current employer. I have sat across the table from the guy I am interviewing with on a couple of deals and I have found him to be a bit of a tosser. First time I spoke with him, he was rambling on about how he was the youngest member of the Marylebone Cricket Club, that his father had him waitlisted as soon as his mother got pregnant, etc. etc. Snooze!!! Oh well, I just have to suck it up and hope that he is not an anal Nazi like whatsername is!

Roo, I have to say I do like Kenny Loggins, ever since this came out:

[Kenny Loggins]I’ve been working so hard
I’m punching my card
Eight hours for what?
Oh, tell me what I got
I’ve got this feeling
That time’s just holding me down
I’ll hit the ceiling or else
I’ll tear up this town

Now I gotta cut loose
Footloose, kick off the Sunday shoes
Please, Louise, pull me off of my knees
Jack, get Mack, come on before we crack
Lose your blues, everybody cut footloose…[/Kenny Loggins]

Well, HRH is waking up from her nap, so I will catch you all on the flip side!

It’s only Tuesday and already it has been a week.

special one you have my sympathy in regard to the formalities of mourning, it has always been my experience that I prefer to do my grieving in private, and I hope that you get that time soon. You remain in my thoughts and prayers.

I am happy to hear that your dad is doing well mmmmms, may he continue to heal. You have a place in my prayers as well, as do your parents.

dogbutler I believe that you gave Maggie the very best life, and you too are in my thoughts and prayers.

Jah I must have missed something, but since everyone is {{{{}}}}}ing you, you have mine as well!

Taters I am glad that your mom is okay, boo to losers who won’t accept the responsibility for their actions. We had a storm go through here last night and most of today, the wind was gusting 50mph+ and the rain was slashing down. I am terribly homesick and we are thinking of moving back to Washington when The Son has graduated, and when you talk about the gloomy weather I smile to myself and look forward to Western Washington’s grey and rainy weather. I am not looking forward to another winter here, especially another el nino winter.

Mama Tigs I have been extremely envious of your trip to Oregon. The beaches, the cheese, the marionberries, and now a photo of you eating marionberry pie ice cream…not fair!!! I’m glad that you had such a good time, really I am!

That sucks about your debit card li-li, I keep mine close at all times for just that reason. Hopefully the bank will expedite getting you a new one.

So skiffman came home tonight. The skipper took a big cow (elk) and skiffman got two deer, so the next three to four days will be spent processing meat, yippee skippee. Fish and Game are encouraging the taking of cows, as the hunters from Outside have been taking too many bulls. The two deer were bucks, a two point and a three point, and we are swapping some of our deer for some of his elk.

The kids had their progress reports come yesterday, both of them have a couple of classes with woeful grades, with all the rest of their grades being A’s. I spent part of the day talking to the schools. My daughter claims that the reason her history class grade is so low is because there are not enough text books to go around and so the students are not allowed to take them home to do…homework. Her other class with a low grade is Comp. & Lit. which I will tutor her in, that was my favorite subject and I always got good grades in those classes. A bit of hijacking my own post, I bought an old copy of Watership Down about five years ago, since she is such an animal nut, but she would not even try to read it. Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago and the animated version came on one of the movie channels and I watched it with her. In fact I have watched it with her every time it has been on since then, even though it makes me cry, and she has now read the book, which will be the subject of her book report assignment. It’s a bit frustrating that it took a “cartoon” before she would crack the cover of the book, but I now have her interest piqued and she is anxiously waiting for Shardik, The Plague Dogs and Duncton Wood to arrive. (I ordered them dirt cheap from ebay) Strike a blow for reading! As for my son, this is his first year since he was diagnosed ADHD that he hasn’t been on an IEP (Individual Education Program). Last year he was on the honor roll the entire year, and all he was taking from the program then was a Study Skills class, which is just a small class working on their schoolwork in a quiet atmosphere. His seventh hour is Driving Prep, and I have left a message with the counsellor that he needs to drop that class and pick up a Study Skills. To make a long story short, this was only progress reports, but I want to encourage them to pull their grades up before report card time.

Other than that I have been perusing the online catalogs for bulbs, but if we are going to get hit with another cold wet winter I don’t really know if I want to bother planting anything. I lost easily over half of the bulbs I planted last autumn. Maybe some asiatic lilies, muscarii, there are a couple of autumn planted perennials which are supposed to thrive in my zone… :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, skiffman wants to tell me more hunting stories, so I’ll say nighty night for now, and add a good morning to all of you who are up and online so much earlier than I.

Oh preview I guess this is a Kenny Loggins night, and this has been rambling around in my head today:

[Kenny Loggins]
Christopher Robin and I walked along
under branches lit up by the moon.
Posing our questions to Owl and Eeyore
as our days disappeared all too soon.
But I’ve wandered much further today than I should
and I can’t seem to find my way back to the wood.

So, help me if you can I’ve got to get
back to the house at Pooh corner by one.
You;d be surprised there’s so much to be done,
count all the bees in the hive,
chase all the clouds from the sky.
Back to the days of Christopher Robin and Pooh.

Winnie the Pooh doesn’t know what to do,
got a honey jar stuck on his nose.
He came to me asking help and advice
and from here no one knows where he goes.
So I sent him to ask of the Owl if he’s there,
how to loosen a jar from the nose of a bear

So, help me if you can…
[/Kenny Loggins]

Mindfield–I was kidding–your hair looks fine to me.

Metra train derailed? I didn’t watch the news last night–I have to go to work today, so went to bed early. I hope nothing too awful (deaths) occurred.
Dotty–I’ll take the tosser over pyscho bitch from hell, any day!

Off to make some moola. TTFN!

That’s the South Shore line–not my line (I’m the University Park train). sounds like they need to do some maintenance.
No One–hang in there. The funeral stuff (and shiva, I suppose) are indeed exhausting, but all too soon, the quiet comes. I also craved the quiet; what irked me no end was that since the memorial service etc were all over, there was an expectation that I would get back to “normal”. I hate the way we “do” death and mourning here. I hope you find the peace you need.

bleh - I felt better yesterday afternoon, now I feel all crappy again. I’m going to hide under the covers again.

Morning sickness? :stuck_out_tongue:

Then we’ll miss, welbywife and I are going Saturday. I’m glad FCD will get to see the show, even if it is a limited day for him. Nothing will put him on recovery road faster than seeing sailboats that can outrun him

Today, I get to have a meeting with a woman who doesn’t like me. I know this because when we set up the meeting she said, “I don’t like you.”

“Envy me” is supposed to be sarcastic? I did not know that.

Because I was going to say that exact phrase. I got me an iMac on my desk - This one. It’s got the dual 2.8GHz Intel Processor and 20 inch display. It is so freaking cool. And I really do need the dual processor. I have to run a Virtual Microsoft operating system for some of our suppliers’ websites (ordering equipment, online training, etc.)

Good morning Mumpers! I’m off today, and it’s hockey season.
Sean, nice.
welby, I hope tha woman isn’t one of your bosses.

kai, I’m a city boy. I wouldn’t know what to do with an elk. Does it taste like chicken?

Good luck with the interviews, Dotty

LiLi, I once had an ATM eat my debit card at the same time my credit card company put a block on my card because I hadn’t used it in a couple of months. Not a fun week.

Taters, nothing like a confrontation with a crazy lady.

Haze, maybe you could visually learn them with a clue by 4?

Rosie, sorry you’re still under the weather.

SpecialOne, It’s now Wednesday. You can make it. Have another drink. Stupid uncomforting mourning ceremonies…
Feel better, rosie. And everyone else out there that’s sick. How’s FCD doing today?
I feel monumentally stupid, because I never take my debit card out of my wallet and carry it, because I know I’ll lose it somehow. I did it just once, to go to the corner store, and poof! it’s gone. I knew it. I’m going to go in to my bank with all my available id and a sad expression, and see if I can get a temporary one. Otherwise the very soonest I’ll be able to access my bank account is next Friday.

If they won’t give me a temp, I’ll just do a big cash advance on my visa.

It’s my Day Off! I get to putz around at home! I’ve gotta reorganize for the Coming of the Washer on Friday. And do some batch cooking so Mr. Lissar will have lunches (N.O.L).

Wheeeee! Sean, that’s one pretty pooter! I do envy you!!!

Interview this morning went okay, and the guy doesn’t seem to be quite so much of a putz as I remembered, which is a plus. He is also willing to consider flexible work arrangements (including split hours between home and office, i.e. part-time telecommute). Wait and see …

Lili, we need to move our furniture around today too. Tomorrow is the Coming of the New King-Size Bed!!! And it’s about time I cleaned out the spare room to accommodate the old bed, and otherwise organise all the crap that’s accumulated in there before Grandma and Grandad arrive, otherwise my parents may be killed in their sleep by hyoooooge dust bunnies!

Nothing more to add, except to offer rosie some chicken soup :: pours it into the cd drive:: Feel better, sweetie!

Conscious. Caffeine. Crazy [del]day[/del] week ahead. Fortunately, it’s hUMp day, which means it’s almost half over, and this weekend being the Canadian thanksgiving, it’s a long weekend, too, which I can appreciate. We’re still not decided on what we’re going to bring to the gathering, but we’re thinking either a big salad or a meat 'n cheese platter. Given our finances this period we’ll probably opt for the salad. Caesar or Greek, most likely. They’re both pretty simple, though if I go Greek I’ll have to find a good dressing. For some reason it’s hard to find a good Greek dressing. I might have to make my own. I’ll also have to put a couple of things on the side, as MindWife is allergic to Feta, and I’d like to add Pepperoncini peppers, but not everyone likes the spicy stuff.

I was so out of it this morning that I utterly forgot to bring my iPod. I didn’t even realize it 'til I was halfway to the bus, and only then because a progression of thoughts formed that I eventually realized shouldn’t have:

It’s a nice day out. Cool breeze. Fresh air. Mmmm.
The clouds are lifting. The sun is starting to come out. Nice.
Wow, there are a lot of seagulls about this morning.
They sure are making a racket. There must be scraps laying around.
That one’s got a set of lungs on it.
Don’t poop on my head.
Wait. Why am I hearing the seagulls?
I shouldn’t be able to hear the seagulls.
My iPod and headphones should be drowning everything out.
iPod?
Oh.
Damn.

As if to make up for the absence of music, a woman got on the bus who liked to sing. Aloud. In public. Did I say sing? I must be feeling tremendously charitable today. Fortunately, once the bus filled up and someone decided to on the seat next to her (which necessitated her moving because she was sitting on the aisle seat despite the window seat being unoccupied and very much identical to the other – a pet peeve of mine) she stopped singing. Or rather, she stopped vocalizing; her mouth kept going, though.

And I just got a call from the employee (technician) of one of our dealers. The employer wants to send this tech out to our annual technician update school that we hold which covers all of the changes and current known issues to all of the products we sell and which they service. It’s a necessary thing if the dealers want to maintain their authorized warranty service status, and there’s a test at the end. Except this employee is afraid he won’t pass the test because, in his words, “[he] don’t read good.” He wanted to know if there would be an oral exam. (No.) Maybe it’s just me, but a technician who can’t read does not inspire confidence in his ability to look up the parts he needs to fix my items. The last thing I’d want to see is him looking on a fiche card or parts lookup software, clicking on the graphic representation of the part he wants and going “Ca … caaar … car! Car. Car…buh. Buh? Boo? Boo. Car…boo. Car…boo…ruh…raaaaay. Car…boo…ray…tuh…tuh…ooooor. Car-boo-ray-tuh-or!” I don’t mean to make fun of one’s deficiencies – hell, we’ve got a mechanic on the east coast who’s blind for cryin’ out loud, but he makes it work for him. An inability to read though, and not for lack of sight or any apparent learning deficiency, is a bit different. It’s sad, but surely it’s treatable, and in an industry where safety is a concern and where warning labels and instruction manuals need to be read… well, jeez. I don’t know why this dealer doesn’t just come out himself. Unless his employee is the better reader.

Around here, the fun never ends!

:: drives by and waves; doles out hugs and chocolate as required ::

Mork, if you want, I can call you and sing to you.

Badly. I can’t hold a tune.

But it’s the thought that counts, right?

What’s your phone number?

yawwwwwwn I’m going to finish caffeinating, then take a shower and pack up the car and all. I have to go to the post office to get a money order for my rent before I leave town, but I just found out they open at 8 and not 9 like I thought, so I guess I should caffeinate faster so I can get going. I don’t know how far I’ll drive today, it depends entirely on how I feel, as long as I get at least halfway there!

Why my grandma felt the need to tell me to be ready for it to be rainy there I don’t know. I’ve only been visiting her out there for, what, at least fifteen years? I know what the weather is like! And I like it, so there!

I did something yesterday I’ve never done in my life; I now have a set of chains for my car. I shouldn’t need them on this trip, and quite possibly not at all this winter, but better to have them and not need them than the other way around, and if I don’t use them I’ll get my money back. When I get back home I need to look into snow tires, I guess. Those I will definitely need.

kai, I have a coworker who has promised he will one day bring me an elkburger. I am looking forward to it! I’ve heard they are quite tasty critters. And I have no objection to hunting as long as what’s hunted gets eaten or otherwise used, so pass the elk! I know they live up here, though unfortunately the only one I’ve seen was apparently a victim of somebody’s godawful huge (but up here, justifiably so!) SUV. Poor elk.

SpecialOne, a day or so of shiva is one thing, but I would have a hard time with a full week as well, no matter how well meant. Hang in there. (And yes, I’m sure a day or so doesn’t really count as shiva, but that’s as close as I’ve gotten to it, after my dad’s death. The food was appreciated, and the neighbors were very kind, I must say, but a week would drive me nuts.)

Lissla, your situation is one reason I really want to finish getting all my money deposited in my local bank account; my current main account is out of a bank in Louisiana, and I was waiting to do it until after today because I accidentally overdrew that account by fifty cents and was waiting for a deposit to come in to fix that, which it has; I haven’t done that in years, dammit! Can’t you get cash from the tellers at your bank? I wouldn’t do it regularly, obviously, but in a pinch it’s still possible. I’ve been waiting for my ATM card to arrive, and until then have done that a couple of times. It’d have to be cheaper than taking out an advance on a credit card!

Okay, I’m caffeinated and must be off. Later!

Hopefully your burger won’t be made from the funny hat…

  and :stuck_out_tongue:

Bon voyage, snowbunny! Enjoy the drive – you’re passing through some gorgeous country here and there (and some desolate country as well, just to keep you on your toes) on your drive!

Morning, all. I’m up and caffeinating, and not firing on all thrusters again. I don’t know what’s afflicting me this week. A three-hour time change does not jet lag make, but my sleep schedule is definitely off. And I was having particularly vivid dreams just before I woke up, although I can’t remember much of anything about them except that they were extremely vivid.

I got nuttin’ today except a pile of work, so I guess I should get to it. We’re not going to the boat show, we’re going to Gettysdope Saturday instead. Should be fun, meeting a bunch of regional Dopers I’ve been looking forward to meeting for a few years now. The longer I’m here, the more I realize what a strong community has been built here. It’s pretty cool. Even Papa Tigs, who doesn’t do internet message boards, enjoys meeting Dopers. Especially since few of the ones he’s met thus far are as crazy as me, so you all look pretty good by comparison.

Morning all. And happy hump day to boot. Today will be long as we have our departmental staff meeting at noon. On the good side, we will be eating a Macaroni Grill lunch. They deliver, too!

Poor tater’s mom! Accidents suck…especially when the one that caused them is underhanded.

bobbio, you so funny.

rosie, hope you feel better soon.

I watched the new Cave Men show premier last night out of curiosity. IMHO it wasn’t as bad as the critics have been saying and kind of interesting…like a train wreck.

Time to go get un caffe (practicing my eyetalian, don’tcha know).
