There’s a new game called Kingdoms of Amalur going on sale Feb 7. However, thre’s a demo, which you can get from the game site or Steam, and it’s a surprise. I thought this would be another cheap Two-Worlds-like dullfest. However, I was surprised to find an engaging action-RPG which doesn’t seem to skimp on the content.
And it was fun. Yes, fun - the thing I used to have before games started requiring 500 hours and a degree. It was just a blast to get in and play, but with lots of specific quests and adventures.
One thing I liked was that the game supports any build with a variety of “destiny cards”, and separates noncombat abilities from killing power. So in a sense, it doesn’t matter how you build you character; there will be a way for you to have fun. In a better sense, it does matter how you build your character, because thats you’re going to be having fun.
Additionally I’ve recently picked up some previews and they’re pretty darn positive. Overall, this game looks like a winner, and I’m definitely hoping to get some new blood the RPG genre.
I downloaded the demo last night, but haven’t fired it up yet. All of the previews I’ve seen are very positive…though I’ve heard that the demo had some serious playability problems; I take it you haven’t experienced any?
I was surprised to see that the studio behind the game was founded by Curt Schilling (yes, *that *Curt Schilling)
The demo’s also available on XBox Live and Playstation Network.
Yes, some folks have run into issues with the demo which should not be present in the release version. Most notably if you have an ATI card, you may need to turn postprocessing effects off in the demo.
Cool to see a thread on the Dope about Reckoning though. I work for the studio.
I hated it, I was bored from the getgo. The PC had a console screw interface, for one, but I can get it on one of my consoles if I feel like it. That said, it felt like Fable II-III (less like the original) if they actually tried to take themselves seriously, and I’m not sure that’s a good thing. I got what was going on, but it didn’t really wow me. That said, I only got to the end of the opening dungeon and couldn’t bring myself to continue past that point. The big selling point is the world depth, sidequests, etc, so maybe I just didn’t continue on long enough for it to become good.
I’m on the fence, I may pick it up, but probably not until it’s on massive sale, especially since I’ll probably be busy trying to decide whether or not I like FF XIII-2, and then when I’m done with that Tales of Graces f will probably be out.
