Hello all, this is my first post on my guest membership.
I was seeking advice on what the hell I should do with my life. I’m young, 20, male, have a child, and not currently in school but hopefully will be soon. I like rock and roll music, I’m interested in politics and current events, but lack the carisma to be a politician, interested in english and literature, hate math with passion, am not very physical but want to be so I won’t die young, enjoy reading and playing music, irked my religious types, like to cook, hate to clean, I’m very intelligent but sometimes can’t read between the lines, although I do have a razor sharp wit and impending sense of doom. I also have a knack for run-on sentences. That’s it, me in a nutshell. Vauge I know. I was wanting to know what some of you with similar interests studied in school, what your jobs are, etc. Also, I want to eventually live a somewhat comfortable middle to upper-middle class lifestyle, just so you know what I’m shooting for.
I’m also very entertained by website/board.
thanks,

Plastics, my boy. The future is plastics.
I was once 20, with a child, and hoping to go back to school. It’s not impossible, but it is extremely difficult. My advice to you is to get your basic coursework out of the way so you can have a shot at making a liveable wage. Once you can settle in a job that actually supports you with something left over to save, you can start thinking about continuing your education.
What should you study? I suggest independently investigating all the things you’re interested in. You will find your niche as you explore the various aspects of, say, the music industry. There are so many ways to get into that business! Performance, production, management, sales, and on and on. Everyone “likes” music. Not too many actually live the dream. You didn’t say if you make any money playing, but I can tell you it is extremely difficult to make a living doing it without having some business sense. You need to know how to manage your career, how to make the right contacts, etc. You need to figure out if you want to be a rock star or if you want a steady income making background music for tv and commercials. You would probably want to look into joining the Musician’s Union.
You might want to look into going to cooking school. It’s expensive, and the hours are long and hard. You wouldn’t want to invest all that money and then find that you have no time for your kid.
Good luck on whatever path you choose!
I thought it was in styrofoam…
Maybe you should consider Porn…
You should pursue a future in the Pop Country business… oh, wait.
I’m thinking a job would be a great way to get started
Try getting an internship or low-level clerk job with a newspaper or other media outlet. It’ll let you know whether or not that’s something you’d want to do with your life, give you a taste of the environment, so to speak.
I wouldn’t job hop, but I’d test the waters in everything you like to see if you’d like to do that. And if you do, go to school for it.
