Looking for some fresh blood when it comes to the Christmas tunes. For example, Christopher Lee singing some dark Christmas metal
This is what I’ve been listening to. In fact, listening to it right this second:
The Tommy Tutone Christmas version of Jenny (867-5309) (or is it the other way around, with Jenny last and in parantheses?) is … not something I need to hear again (though Youtube comments seem to indicate it has its adherents), but the rest is pretty solid if you’re sick of the usual Christmas schlock and have a mostly punk/post-punk/alt-rock sensibility.
Jorma Kaukonen from Hot Tuna and Jefferson Airplane released a Christmas record you may not have heard. Worth owning. Here’s the track “Christmas Rule” about a chimney fire burning on Christmas eve:
Gwen Stefani wrote several new songs for her Christmas album. It’s quickly become my current favorite.
You Make it Feel Like Christmas - Gwen Stefani
Let It Be Christmas - Alan Jackson
The Angels Cried - Alan Jackson
Those are my favorite “new” Christmas songs. Sorry, they’re not like the dark Christmas songs mentioned above.
Mitch Benn’s Xmas album needs some love. Benn’s main thing is soundalike parodies rather than straight parodies like Weird Al so the styles may sound familiar but not obvious. Tracks 1, 5, and 10 are personal faves.
Not sure how new, but I just stumbled on this yesterday: Postmodern Jukebox (14 tracks)
I particularly like “Last Christmas” à la The Andrews Sisters – the best part: no George Michael!
I thought of another newer one - Breath of Heaven by Amy Grant.
This song is in the same family as Fairytale of New York, and features a Pogue.
The So So Glos feat. Spider Stacy of The Pogues
Fairytale of New York by the Pogues. (It was new to me recently, anyway.) Fairytale of New York (feat. Kirsty MacColl) [Top of The Pops Dec 1987] - YouTube
Warning for language on both videos.
From the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, “I Don’t Know What Christmas Is (But Christmastime Is Here)”
“Lonely Christmas” by Wallis

The First Noel-The Fab Four© Christmas Beatles Style - YouTube
There is a whole album of stuff like this. Go check it out!
2 new fairly songs from Blake’s Christmas album
Oklahoma Christmas Blake Shelton and Reba
There’s a New Kid in Town Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson
I like New Kid the best. George Strait also covered it.
This thread from a few days ago has a ton of suggestions.
Kathy Mattea sings new material. You won’t find Jingle Bells, Rudolph or any of the kids Christmas songs on her two Christmas albums.
Good News 1993 and Joy for Christmas Day 2003
I usually like to play Christmas music and zone out. Can’t do that with Mattea. I have to really listen closely to the unfamiliar lyrics.
If you enjoyed the Old 97s performing as the alien band at the beginning and end of the Guardians of the Galaxy holiday special, there’s more where that came from. They released a Christmas album a couple years back with about half original songs and half traditional.
I was listening to Christmas music on Pandora (yes, it’s me the Jewish person who likes Christmas music!) and I heard a really great instrumental of the Little Drummer Boy. I found the album on Amazon and ended up buying the whole thing: It’s Snow Waltz by Lindsey Stirling and apparently just came out this year so definitely qualifies as new .
