Glee 1:21 "Funk" (open spoilers)

I agree exactly. Morrison is, objectively, attractive. But there’s just something off-putting about him that I can’t figure out.

He kind of reminds me of a hobbit.

I find the hair too curly. Maybe if he cut it short.

I really wish that the Loser segment in the store had gone longer, but it was pretty funny to see Puck air guitaring after Terri adjusted the stereo.

It helps a bit.

A smarmy expression maybe?

I was quite disappointed by Shue’s so totally whitified Tell Me Something Good. Granted, no one can out-sex Chaka on that one, but that was just. . . pitiful.

Absolutely loved Loser. Only I was shocked when my daughter pointed out that that song is almost 20 years old. Damn, time flies.

I got a big grin on my face when I heard “Loser” begin, but (not for the first time) I also thought “This song is too old for these kids to remember from when it was a hit, and not old enough for them to have learned from the oldies station.”

It’s one of those MST3K themesong moments:

Otherwise you’ll be questioning how the house band at a community theater did such a great rendition of Dream On with no rehearsal or why Les Mis auditions had electric guitars in the first place, or how the Glee Club room has such fantastic spotlights or how the school manages to pay for a full time Glee club pianist who doesn’t speak but is always “just around the corner” or where the accompanying instruments come from when it’s just said pianist or how the school has such a stellar Glee club yet there’s no overlap with the theater department or just exactly why Sue has such passionate hatred for the Glee club when she has boosters who’ll pay for anything.

Hey, I don’t hold Glee to a high standard of realism. To the extent that the inclusion of '90s songs bothers me at all, it’s only because right after I think “AW YEAH!” or “Ha ha, I remember this one!” I think “Wait, this song was a hit before these kids were born. WHEN DID I GET OLD?”

And I guess Puck might know “Loser” because his parents played it while he was growing up, although it doesn’t make me feel any younger to think that today’s teenagers might know songs from when I was a teenager because that’s the kind of music their parents like! Of course, while Puck and Finn would have been either fetuses or infants when “Loser” was a hit, Mark Salling and Cory Monteith probably do remember it because they’re nearly the same age as I am.

Not even Vocal Adrenaline’s “Under Pressure”?

I quite liked all the songs, but thought the overall plot was a little weak. Certainly, as mentioned, the timeline for Jesse has him all over the place. I did appreciate the comment about Rachel not having erased his number from her phone, but didn’t catch who said it.

Favorite line for me was: “That’s because we’re soulless automatons.”

Yeah, Shum does a great job considering they never give him anything to actually say. Sometimes it seems like the show has way too many characters and stories to keep up with for the amount of time they have to do so. Any time they give to one story, they have to ignore other stories that are presumably continuing along on their own, leaving weirdness like all those weeks where nobody knew where Quinn was living. They do a pretty good job overall, though, so I’m sure we’ll get more of Mike Chang as soon as they can work him in.

I’m pretty sure the previews said that next episode is Regionals and the season finale.

According to the article in the recent Entertainment Weekly, yes, more Mike Chang next season.

And yes, next week is Regionals/season finale.

Too Geddy Lee-like?

About 7 years ago, my son came up to me after school and asked if I had “ever heard of this really old band…I think they’re called Nirvana?”

I died a little inside.

ANYWAY, I thought this was a fair to middlin’ episode. I just don’t buy any “chemistry” between Shu and Sue, so the ploy just felt uncomfortable uncomfortable, not possible uncomfortable or hot uncomfortable, you know what I mean? They make great best enemies, but I don’t read any real *sexual *tension between them (unlike between Sue and Bryan Ryan…that was HOT).

The music in this one left me cold, except for the opening number (which I forget what it was at the moment) by VA, and “Loser” was okay.

I want Jesse to die a death of a thousand papercuts. I was really hoping they’d play the gay card and match him up with Kurt, but after this, I don’t think even Kurt would have him.

IIRC, there has been some debate here about whether Finn was a senior this year. Maybe in the pilot he was identified as such? Or maybe it was assumed that he is an upperclassmen since he’s the starting varsity quarterback.

Anyways, in this episode Terri asks Finn how old he is and he says “16.” That would make him (most likely) a sophomore–same as Rachel.

Yeah, but the team sucks.

Same here. Some on other message boards have suggested it’s because Jane Lynch was in the news this week for marrying her partner but I don’t think that’s it at all as she and NPH, both queer, had chemistry- but it’s just not there with Matthew Morrison. The age difference is a factor (even though Sue claims to be 29) plus I think Sue is too savvy to fall for so obvious a line. Admittedly they danced well together that one time, but it wasn’t due to attraction so much as it was to Sue training up for the '40s ball with her date the anchorman.
Perhaps she’s just very lonely; the only other people we’ve seen in her life are the anchorman who cheated on her and her retarded sister. I loved her apartment decor by the way, and was glad they remembered Will speaks Spanish.
Speaking of the gay issue, usually it’s not a problem when I know an actor is gay to imagine him or her in a straight role; Frasier reruns lose nothing knowing that DHP is gay when he’s chasing Daphne or John Mahoney when he’s on a date. However, Jonathan Groff/Jesse is just someone I can’t buy as a straight guy; he’s probably fine on stage where there’s a lot of distance and you don’t notice all the details, but on the up-close-and-personal level of the camera he just screams “grab the asbestos suits cause the flames are this way coming” and I have more sexual chemistry with a plate of scrambled eggs than he has with Rachel. Anybody else get this vibe?
An unrelated question: I know nothing about show choirs. Are any of them really allowed to be as sexually suggestive in their moves and motions as Vocal Adrenoline was last night or as Nude Erections has been a couple of times?

Another unrelated question: I realize it’s just a show and all but could a pregnant woman in good shape really dance like Quinn and the Unwedettes last night?

I know, and the quarterback thing wasn’t my argument–just one I’ve seen other people post as evidence that Finn must be a senior or at least a junior.

And many really good varsity football teams have had sophomores for quarterbacks. Coaches love it when they find a great young QB they can start as a sophomore and ride to the playoffs three years in a row.

Actually it’s Kurt that wants to ride Finn for three years.

You’re a bad, bad man.

Kurt may have to get in line behind Terri.
