Glee: 2.03 "Grilled Cheesus" (open spoilers)

That resemblence is remarkable! Even siblings don’t usually look so much alike.

As a religious person, I wasn’t offended at either the mocking (I giggled at Grilled Cheesus, although who makes a grilled cheese on a George Foreman grill?) or the fact that they represented people who happen to be atheists. They have made Kurt less likable this season - I didn’t like the way he treated Burt in the beginning. But teenagers aren’t always pleasant people.

StG

Finn was even more self-centered than normal this episode; even Puck came across as more empathetic.

The whole thing with Artie on the football team is ridiculous.

Too early in the show’s run for “Gather the family for a Special Episode”, but some good performances made up for it.

“Is God an evil dwarf?”

No kidding. He thought praying to Grilled Cheezus actually made things happen so why didn’t he pray for Kurt’s dad who was the closest thing he had to a father?

I really, really liked this episode… more than made up for the two previous lame ones. Actually reminded me quite a bit of B:tVS’s “The Body” (though not nearly as classic). I was actually moved (OK, I’ll admit it, nearly to tears) several times, which hadn’t happened yet this season, and only a few times last season.

I thought all sides of the religion spectrum were presented pretty fairly, especially though the lens of immature teens. Some are struggling with issues of faith. some are still blindly following what they’ve been raised to. Some have come to their own conclusions. A pretty accurate sampling of high school, as I recall.

Wile E, I actually thought that was handled pretty well when Finn realized that Puck (Puck?!?!) was praying for Burt and he’d been too self absorbed to think of it.

A few quibbles:

  • Do Sikh women wear the turban? I thought it was a men only thing.
  • “papa can you hear me” would’ve been stronger if Kurt had sung at least a verse or two. as he said at the end, he doesn’t believe in God, but he does believe in Burt, and his talking to a father who might or might not be hearing is “praying” of a sort. It seemed a bit weird for Rachel to be singing it direct to Burt and touching his head(?!?), when I don’t think they had even a conversation before. I would’ve cut back and forth from Rachel & Finn in the park and Kurt alone with Burt at the hospital as they sang… but that’s just me.
  • dammit, I hate when Sue is human… but they do it so damn well. The problem is it makes it all that much more unbelievable when she’s back to her normal self.

Anyway, quibble aside… a great return to form, IMHO. Great acting from most of the cast. A good mix of songs, sung well. Surprisingly deep writing with a touchy subject matter. A+.

There’s a cute moment during the church scene when Kurt and a lady in a pew across the aisle acknowledge each other as they are both wearing almost the exact same hats.

I actually cried through the whole show. Not, you know, because I’ve lost my dad, or that my cousin’s husband and father of her three kids died the other day, or that my kids’ dad has left their lives…nope, that can’t be it. Sigh.

I loved Finn’s remark about “cheesy Lord” during his first prayer … and I lol’d when Sue said, “Enroll them in Holy Sweet Mary Mother of God Academy on 123 Jesus Street.”

We do just have to accept that Glee exists in some kind of alternate universe. No, singing religious music in glee club is **not **a church/state issue, for reasons mentioned above (and many others). My wife works for a school district here, and fire was coming out of her eyes when Sue brought that up to Principal Figgins (“it’s not a documentary, dear, it’s just a show …”).

Then Burt’s comment about the usual Friday night dinners, and Finn was going to be there. Uh, no, he damn well wasn’t going to be … Friday night is high school football night, and I think Finn would have been excused. Unless the Titans had that week off or something … and again, I don’t know about these oddball Ohio scholastic football rules if they allow wheelchair-bound ball carriers (“it’s not against the rules. We checked.” Yeah, right) and field-goal kicking units to dance to “Single Ladies” without any kind of delay-of-game or illegal motion penalties.

Alternate universe. That’s it. Still love it, though.

Almost forgot!! Brittany!! “I made a card that said heart attacks come from loving too much.” And her giving her heart attack report/project to Kurt, so he could give it to the doctors. “I got marked down a whole letter grade because I wrote it in crayon.” Love that Britt!!

Thank you! About half the time, I can’t hear what she’s saying and those were both lines I didn’t hear fully.

And it also gives me a chance to remark what fine eye candy she provided in last week’s Britney Spears episode!

I stand corrected:
"The turban is mostly identified with the Sikh males, although some Sikh women also wear turban. " - Dastar - Wikipedia

I noticed that too. hilarious!

Yes! After being very emotionally invested throughout almost the entire episode, that was jarring. I turned to my husband and wailed “But it’s so old!” Completely took me out of the moment.

Overall, I liked it a lot. I thought Chris Colfer was excellent. Also, some terrific Brittany lines, which I always think work better when they are a real contrast to what is going on in the story – sometimes, now that the writers know fans are eagerly anticipating her comments, I think they try too hard.

In a weird way, I was a little disappointed that Sue told Emma the story about Jean … I liked having her relationship with her sister be something known only to Sue and the viewers, and not the other characters (sort of like Mr. Snuffleupagus).

I probably missed that bit because I watch it at work and some people have the gall to come in or call us during that time and we have to turn down the sound. Not to mention the non-Gleek co-worker who came into the lounge and banged around slamming doors and drawers for about 5 minutes making her dinner.

Trivia: the old lady next to Kurt at Mercedes’ church is Norma Miller, a jazz singer and (once, long ago) dancer who may be best known for playing Grady’s girlfriend Dolly on Sanford & Son. (She’s uncredited but I’m positive it’s her.)

Little Kurt was played by Adam Kolkin, a surname that’s really close to Colfer, so I’m wondering also if there’s a relationship. Does anybody know if Chris Colfer changed his name?

I giggled in a few parts, teared up on some others.

I thought that it was pretty obnoxious of them to sit around and pray for Burt even after Kurt specifically expressed that he didn’t want their prayers. Rachel’s Yentl song was beautiful, though.

I also cringed when Finn ate that sandwich. I sincerely doubt they were symbolizing eating of the body of Christ with Grilled Cheesus, and if they were, extra kudos to them. But it did squick me out.

I don’t believe that a high school senior would be so prudish about allowing her boyfriend to feel up her boobs. Geesh.

Kurt’s mini-me was amazing.

Besides having the word “religion” in the title, “Losing my Religion” has nothing to do with religion. I liked Finn’s version of it, mind you, but the lyrics had nada to do with loss of faith. It seems to me that the writers are doing a “Mamma Mia” and fitting songs around the plot instead of vice versa.

Kurt and the black woman exchanging knowing looks was cute.

I didn’t care for their version of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” at all. I love that song and I can get into a good gospel song, but that arrangement left me cold.

“I Wanna Hold Your Hand” was sweet, but once again, they need to quit being so literal and start paying attention to the lyrics.

I’m not what most would call sentimental, but I’ll admit a couple of the scenes got to me. I’m sure others here have also done the “if you hear me squeeze my hand” ritual with a critically ill loved one and I thought Kurt/Chris nailed the emotions of it, and I Want To Hold Your Hand was just a lovely arrangement (I haven’t seen Across the Universe and great montage that spoke volumes about their relationship. I thought Rachel did a great job on Papa Can You Hear Me but that dramatically it was Ultimate Drama Queen since it’s not her father (she has two dads, neither in ‘heaven’).
Still bothered by the wheelchair football- that would never happen in 8 million years. If Artie’s parents didn’t file suit then the school board would forbid it- the liability issues are endless. But, “remind yourself it’s just a show, sit back and just relax”.

So I wonder who’s taking care of Kurt since his mom’s dead and his dad’s in the hospital and will probably need at least short term care once released (since it was obviously a massive heart attack rather than a “two days in the hospital then a week off and resume status quo” event).

And I love that Sue is the only character on TV who would call the gay kid “Lady” while taking their side for heartfelt reasons.

I agree with PunditLisa on Bridge Over Troubled Water- technically well done but just didn’t do anything for me.

You wanna see something really scary?

This is a pictureof Chris Colfer (Kurt) and Adam Kolkin (Mini-Kurt) together. And no, they’re no relation.

Good point, I can buy Emma (& Will for some reason) driving Kurt to the hospital (though I have no idea if actually HS counselors would do that), but who was making Burt’s medical desicions while he was in the coma? His 16 yr old son or his live-in girlfriend? :dubious: It looked like Kurt was; he was able to order accupuncture.

Of course now that Burt is awake (& hopefully coherent) even if he does need rehab before going home it’s not like Kurt will end up in foster care. There is another adult in the household, Carol. I doubt Kurt is as clueless re domestic science as say Finn.

If Kurt is a senior, he may be 18 already. If not, his father’s parents could have POA rights. There was no mention of his grandparents being dead. And, of course, this is a t.v. drama where nobody exists outside of the main and secondary characters. I mean, none of House’s patients ever have family members around to object to his hair-brained tests.

Isn’t she a junior? She was a sophomore during the first 22 episodes, if I’m not mistaken. Since the new season starts after summer break, that would mean she’s started a new year.

I think they’re were all supposed to be sophomores last year making them juniors this year and seniors next year. Kurt is at least 16 since there was a reference to him having a car last year.
