Tonight’s episode sounds like a good one (though it’s hard to imagine something worse than last week). Kurt should be getting some major sreentime with his father being hospitalized.
I really liked tonight’s episode, but I was annoyed at how Kurt & Sue’s atheism was handled. Did they really have to go the whole “I don’t believe in God 'cause bad things happened to me (or my family) and he didn’t intervene” route with both of them?
I liked that they left Finn’s voice a bit rough on “Losing My Religion”. Normally, they seem to auto-tune him half to death.
I didn’t think they did that with Kurt. Maybe I missed it, but I don’t recall him mentioning any direct causation between his mother’s death and his atheism. I think the general issue of not being able to reconcile the idea of a loving God with the shitty things that are apparently part of His plan is a pretty common reason for people to lose their faith.
I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, but have to know: is Papa Can You Hear Me? sung by Kurt or Rachel?
I’m almost embarassed to admit how much Yentl resonated with me as a kid. One reason was that song- it came out very soon after my own father died.
I would be absolutely fine with them retiring “tribute” episodes: Madonna, Lady Gaga and Britney Spears have been probably my three least favorite musically and prefer the variety aspect of regular episodes, or theme episodes (dream songs, in this one evidently songs to do with religion, etc.). Anyone else feel likewise?
Rumored upcoming episodes include N’Sync and Bruce Springsteen themed episodes. I find Bruce the least objectionable so far but would still prefer not to limit themselves, and would prefer Billy Joel or Elton John if they were going to go with 70s/80s/90s legends.
The scenes with young Kurt were really touching, especially the tea party scene. :o Glurgy, but good. I hope they somehow find away to have Kurt’s mother on the show. Either more flashbacks, or a fantasy sequence with Kurt, or something.
Little Kurt was a dead ringer. I wonder if a little brother was involved.
I checked the official GLEE forum- a bunch of Christians are having meltdowns about their faith being mocked, some non-believers are miffed about how pro-faith the episode was, a few thoughtful people on both sides liked it. I, of course, thought it was quite all right and wondered what those uber-Christians who are just now getting offended was watching last season.
People are funny like that. I remembered when I worked at the newspaper in town I had one guy call to cancel because the paper was too liberal. No fooling, thirty minutes later I had someone call and cancel because it was too conservative.
Anywho, I thought tonight was a good episode. The characters acted more normal. Some good lines (No, a 300 pound linebacker who just got expelled for being on steroids and 23 injured him).
I’ve never liked Kurt and this episode didn’t change anything. I liked that it wasn’t some manufactured fawning of whatever pop singer they decided to do that week.
I realize it was just a plot device for the point!-counter point! of the show but Sue’s case seemed especially weak. A week in glee club about spirituality in music wouldn’t be different from a comparative religions segment in history or survey of religion in literature. Particularly since Will made a point of saying it shouldn’t be strictly about God or Jesus but generic spirituality. Also, glee club is an extracurricular activity that you could skip for that week without consequence if you really objected unlike skipping English class.
Also, eating a week old grilled cheese sandwich that’s seen infrequent refrigeration at best should be enough to make you see God.
