Looks like someone’s going to die tonight. Will it be one of the main cast, or a background character nobody really noticed untill tonight and of whom nobody will ever speak of again?

I’ll put my prediction in a spoiler box, although it’s pure speculation. I think the death will be:
Sue’s older sisteras this would be sad, but have little impact on most of the main characters and wouldn’t really make any difference as far as any of the long-running story arcs go. It would also give the writers an excuse to:
have Sue either behave with unusual kindness towards others in honor of her sister’s memory, or else go on a grief-stricken rampage of epic proportions.
There at least two other characters who could die at this point without it being a total shock, but these would be much darker and have more impact on the storyline. At least one is also something I believe the writers have specifically said they wouldn’t do.
It would be really upsetting if Kurt’s dad had another heart attack and died, and his character is so popular I don’t think they’ll kill him off. At least I hope they won’t! It’s all too plausible that Karofsky would commit suicide, but IIRC the writers have said they weren’t going to go there.
He really seems to have a thing for skull prints. I was thinking those pants were the sort of thing my semi-Goth younger sister might like, and a quick Google led me to a blog devoted to identifying articles of clothing that have appeared on Glee. Turns out they’re over $500, so I don’t think she’ll be getting those for Christmas.
I thought this episode was pretty solid as a stand-alone, but I feel like they have left us hanging regarding the Santana/Brittany/Artie love triangle. And if New Directions is headed for Nationals next week, I’m thinking we won’t see Karofsky again this year.
As big a jerk as he is, I was glad Jesse St. James pointed out that there’s no real reason why Finn should be considered their default male soloist. That has always bothered me, because as Jesse said, every other guy in the club except Mike is at least as good a singer as Finn, and Mike is a fantastic dancer while Finn…is not. (BTW, I love that Sue randomly hates the “dancing Asian” this week.) Most of the other male choir members do have their weaknesses – Puck is unreliable, Mike can’t sing, Artie can’t dance, Kurt’s vocal range isn’t right for most traditionally “masculine” songs – and Sam did get the male solo at Sectionals, but it seems like Finn has often been handed solos just for being adequate. I doubt this will change, but it was nice to hear it acknowledged.
I do have one big problem with this episode, although it may be one of those things that just has to be accepted as Glee logic. With just days to go before Nationals, New Directions had not only not rehearsed their routine at all, they haven’t even chosen their songs. Or rather they haven’t even written their songs, because for some reason Mr. Schu thinks it’s a good idea to write an entirely new selection of original songs (not the ones that already won them Regionals!) at the last minute. Will they also be working out their choreography in the airport and constructing origami costumes out of in-flight magazines while en route?
I think next season will be very weird. Especially if Sue doesn’t fall back into her old routine. Between her and Terri the two biggest bitches on the show just got spayed. And Mr Shue might not be back. There have been rumours that Matthew Morrison want’s out (he’s already dropped out of the summer tour) to focus on his solo career. It’s would seem April Rhodes’s show subplot was expressly made so they can explain away his absence if doesn’t come back until later in the season if at all. I wonder who’d replace him as New Directions’s coach? Emma seems like the most logical choice, but they could try an introduce a new character (which I think would be a mistake). What if Sue tries to seize control and ends up fighting it out with Emma? And what happens if they win Nationals? Will next year feature their journey to represent the US at some kind of international event? Or will they loose, and spend next year trying to get back to Nationals?
There have been rumors that Blaine will transfer to McKinley next year, and if that’s true then Finn should be basically done for as a soloist. Blaine is also used to having solos handed to him, AND he’s actually good.
I have been wondering if they’re moving towards having New Directions be a more accepted part of the school and not the constant target of abuse from other students and Sue. Any story does of course need conflict, but I don’t think it would hurt the show at all if the whole “bullies throw Slushies on glee club members” thing was dropped.
In story terms Holly Holiday would seem like an obvious replacement, but I doubt Gwyneth Paltrow would put the rest of her career on hold to star on Glee. I agree that Emma Pillsbury would be the most logical choice out of the current cast, although Coach Bieste could be fun.
Realistically there’s no way they’d beat Vocal Adrenaline with an act they threw together in a week, but since it’s Glee anything could happen. If it were me I’d give them some sort of qualified victory this year, like a tie or a second-place turned into a win because Vocal Adrenaline is disqualified. Then I’d wrap the whole series up in the 3rd season and end with a true win at Nationals and the graduation of the current batch of New Directions members.
I’d go on to create a spin-off centered on Burt Hummel, sort of a Gilmore Girls style quirky family comedy/drama.
What the heck happened to Coach Bieste? Last I saw they made her feel like a pretty pretty girl and then POOF! I know it’s not football season, but surely (like many high schools) the football coach is there teaching geology or something.
I really expected Karofsky to buy it this episode and I was really hoping they wouldn’t go there. I thought the episode was really sad. I liked Sue back when she was a slightly deranged, driven coach but I have hated the downhill slide into “sending the Glee kids to Libya” - and I’m one of the biggest defenders that will shout “It’s a show! You have to suspend reality!” So it was nice to see her not be totally psycho. I did wonder if the evil ex’s plane tickets were false, or come with double secret probation that gets all the kids a lay-over in the TSA suite. Guess we will see!
She’s going to be like Gooch and come back pregnant midseason.
As for possible Mr. Schuester replacements: Neil Patrick Harris as the character he played before but of course that and HIMYM would be taxing to him. Or Alan Rickman as a brilliant choir coach but his quirk is he’s insane and thinks he’s Severus Snape. Or Charlie Sheen.
“Ok guys, you’re all obvious loser. I’m here to teach you about WINNING. Now Jesse St. James and I are going to go in this closet and snort a shitload of coke, stick dollar bills to strippers’ asses then have a strangely heterosexual make out session with each other like two awesome bros do when they’re coked up and in a closet, and when we come back, I wanna see some motherfuckin’ tiger blood, bitches!”
And Brittney is the only one that understand him. New love interest in the triangle!
She took Mr. Schuester out to the roadhouse after work back in “Blame it On the Alcohol”, but I don’t think she’s been seen since. It would have been nice to have her a chaperone at prom.
And he’s never gotten over the late Mrs. Hummel choosing Burt over him.
Frankly, I’m just annoyed that they’re doing original music at all. That’s not the gimmick that the show started out with, and I have no faith that the writers can come up with good music on a reliable basis. By cherry-picking good music, they can avoid clunkers and tap into nostalgia and pop culture. I really think that this swing toward more original music is a negative trend for the show.
My understanding is it’s totally $$$. Murphy and the cast have done nothing but bitch about how little of the money they get from the soundtracks and somehow using original songs earns them a lot more. I suppose it has to do with the licensing fees for a known hit rather than an unknown song- anyone here know how it works?
I think somebody finally realized that they had better return to their roots, or they would turn into a guest star variety show. Hopefully they keep this up.
Still, I am beginning to wonder how much longer these characters can pull off being in high school…
Do you think they will be dropping some and getting new characters, or follow them into college? Then again, the cast of Happy Days were wearing high school jackets even after their temples were turning gray, so who knows.
I had to wonder, when he was saying he wanted two hit songs written by the time they land in JFK, to what extent the writers are just messing with us here with the whole “two weeks before nationals and they haven’t even picked out a set list, yada yada yada” thing. I think it’s gone so far beyond implausible that it’s become a kind of joke, but they never seem to winkingly acknowledge it.
Definitely enjoyed the episode overall, however.
