Glee 5/8: Promasaurus

To me, it’s not that she was hiding it. I think everyone would have been generally okay with that, if it really had purely been for dramatic effect. It was that she was using it to get prom queen votes. Her speech in the hallway to that random girl about how she was jealous of her “fully functional legs” and how sad she was that she may “never walk again” showed that she saw her “paralysis” as an asset in her campaign. It speaks of manipulativeness and dishonesty, traits that Quinn was known for much more in season one, late season two, and early season three. It’s a sign that she’s regressing back to her old ways at a time when everyone thought that she was getting better.

Wow, that 4th Glee Project winner didn’t get to do anything. Hopefully they were just introducing her for the next season, otherwise what a huge rip-off.

Speaking of huge rip-offs:

Yes, that was all kinds douche-y.

Also note that none of the juniors were interested at all in this year’s junior prom, although I think the only female junior in the group is Tina, who was going to the senior prom with Mike. I was half-expecting Figgins to cancel junior prom after what had happened the previous year.

The first time, it definitely was. This time, there is some question as to whether it is Mirren or somebody doing a Mirren impression. Since Mirren wasn’t credited the first time, the lack of a credit doesn’t seem to give any answer.

Rachel winning came out of left field, until the minute where Quinn said that her win didn’t really feel right. (At first, I thought they might give it to Becky, as I thought I saw her wearing a crown in one of the commercials, but it must have been the “anti-prom crown”, especially as the prom queen wears a tiara - but when Finn was the most likely prom king, Rachel was the obvious choice for “replacement queen”.)

As for “Dinosaur,” it was obviously meant as a dance number for Heather Morris, who wasn’t hired for her singing ability, so they needed something that (a) fit the theme and (b) she could “sing”. It also doesn’t hurt that the choreographers who decide who gets Emmy nominations in choreography (yes, it’s a category) tend to prefer solo or duet numbers to “group” routines, and yes, I do remember there were six “backup dancers” in dinosaur heads (and, unlike on Smash, the Glee “dancers” never get credited).

Who was the “fourth Glee Project winner”? Lindsay Pearce? She performed twice, didn’t she (“Anything Goes” at that “NYADA hopefuls group” Rachel and Kurt attended, and again at Sectionals)? She also said that she was a sophomore, if as she was telling the audience that she might be transferring to McKinley for Season 4.

Ohhh, I didn’t recognize her.

You’re right, of course, and the dancing was very good. Still, the tone and lyrics of the song are so far out there for a prom setting that I couldn’t get past it. And there are good ways of featuring Heather’s dance moves: see the performance of “Dance With Somebody” in the episode of the same name.

Off topic, but I thought that Lindsay Pearce had by far the most star power of any of the Glee Project winners, and I actually would like to see her come back.

Alex Newell’s (Wade/Unique) performace of “Boogie Shoes” was also quite good, but Damian McGinty (Rory) and Samuel Larsen (Joe) have been merely adequate all season.

They totally missed the chance to have New Directions sing the Screaming Blue Messiahs’ “I Wanna Be a Flintstone”. I did like Brittany’s Wilma dress very much though, thank you.

As **Loopus **said, this makes more sense if we take Quinn’s sin to be exaggerating the severity of her disability in order to win pity votes…but if that was the writers’ intention, they did a pretty poor job of conveying it. What Finn actually said and did – particularly in that unpleasant scene where he started yelling at Quinn in the middle of prom to stand up and walk – indicated that he was in fact angry about Quinn’s failure to reveal that she could take a wobbly step or two.

I also thought it was odd that Finn apparently believed that Quinn standing up would turn the crowd against her and cost her the crown. Since she was still obviously shaky, I would assume that the other kids would think “Wow, Quinn just managed to stand up for the first time since her accident!” and be even more likely to vote for her. And if we were supposed to find it heartwarming that Rachel was named Prom Queen and was finally the center of (unearned) attention at McKinley, it seems strange that we were also apparently supposed to find it admirable that Quinn choose the Prom King and Queen’s big dance as the moment to publicly show off her regained ability to stand. It struck me more as the sort of thing Quinn would only do if she were trying to steal the spotlight back from Rachel, but the show didn’t portray it that way.

I saw most of The Glee Project, and it really seemed like McGinty and Larsen won largely for being cute, and in McGinty’s case also because he was pleasant and easy to get along. They’re both pretty good singers, but I don’t know that they were really better than the other contestants. As is perhaps obvious by now, there was no acting component to The Glee Project, and the roles of all the winners have probably been limited by their lack of experience/skill in that area.

I think I mentioned this in a previous thread, but with most of the season now behind us I think Pearce and Newell actually lucked out when they were named runners-up on The Glee Project instead of winners. While McGinty and Larsen must be making more money for appearing on multiple episodes of Glee, I don’t think hanging around in the background and doing little of significance on the show is going to be much of a boost to their careers. Pearce and Newell came on, did a couple of good musical numbers, and are now free to pursue other things.
