Is there any way to get him to do this off of American soil?
Or is the US that he so despises actually his safety net (tax write-off) for when the whole thing crumbles?
If he had any actual faith (balls) he’s attempt this in Guyana.
My vote is for a scam, bilking the wannabe Galtians out of their money for a share of this brave new utopia of self-reliance. Beck is the shill, the money people will provide the land, and when the whole thing goes off the rails Beck will blame the liberals and the gubmint for not letting them do things “properly” and then go off to count his cash or gold or whatever while the participants are stuck with a useless overvalued parcel of prarieland.
But if they do do a Biodome thing, we must make sure Pauly Shore is sealed inside as well.
I would like to suggest Wyoming for the location. Or North Dakota, if that is a real place.
Do the inhabitants of Keister-topia have to be volunteers? Because I have a few names I’d like to suggest for involuntary transport…
Pauly vs Beck. Thunderdome. Mano a mano. Dweeb a dweeb. Pay per view.
Glen Beck is in for a terrible disappointment, the first time somebody pisses him off and he’s unable to think him into the cornfield.
What, do you think you’re some kind of rocket scientist?
Reminds me of Jim Bakker’s ‘Jesusland’ or whatever it was called. (I really should remember, a lot of my family live in Charlotte because they moved there to work for Bakker in the late 70s.)
It’s funny to me that it all the Ayndroids these days seem so religious. I bet Rand would hate these people and their bible-thumping.
Dammit, I was gonna mention that. Well, uh… I brought a video! Taking bets on when they manage to get telekinetic powers (and physical dependencies causing crippling insanity) from slugs that secrete stem cells that they find in the woods.
(And aside from the clearly fantasy stuff, they sold guns in vending machines)
Um, as someone who spent time studying at the Biosphere 2, I’d really appreciate it if we could just drop the comparisons. It’s insulting to Pauly Shore.
Here’s how I see this working. Theme park etc. are off in the future. Main stating point is a simple planned community like thousands of others out there. They can’ really go full Galt, because they’re constrained by the evils of the US government (and since Beck isn’t a cult leader per se, just a profit-focused scammer, he’s not going to pull a Waco or similar compound).
Like some other gated communities (assuming they get critical mass of people moving in), they’ll have their own services. You can either pay for the service (e.g. Beck’s Plow Services) to maintain your section of road or do it yourself. Wash, rinse, repeat. They’ll hire people from neighboring communities to clean toilets and whatnot, because that’s just a contract. If something happens to a neighbor, so be it–just like in other gated communities. Homeowners association will be a set of bylaws with minimal rules. There are plenty out there already, but they’re not packaged or marketed like this.
So if it gets off the ground, it’ll be a gated community of assholes, people who never developed philosophically or emotionally beyond the tenth-grader’s fascination with Ayn Rand.
Ayn Rand did in fact hate American Libertarians. She said so herself… many times. My favorite of hers:
AR: “I’d rather vote for Bob Hope, the Marx Brothers, or Jerry Lewis—they’re not as funny as John Hospers and the Libertarian Party.”
Or how about… Q: What is your position on the Libertarian Party?
AR: I don’t want to waste too much time on it. It’s a cheap attempt at publicity, which libertarians won’t get.
And finally… Q: Libertarians advocate the politics you do, so why are you opposed to the Libertarian Party?
AR: They’re not defenders of capitalism. They’re a group of publicity seekers who rush into politics prematurely, because they allegedly want to educate people through a political campaign, which can’t be done. Further, their leadership consists of men of every persuasion, from religious conservatives to anarchists. Most of them are my enemies: they spend their time denouncing me, while plagiarizing my ideas. Now it’s a bad sign for an allegedly pro-capitalist party to start by stealing ideas.
To put it simply, Ayn Rand was NO fan of libertarianism.
Will no one think of the stately tetrahedron?
Causing trouble requires a container with a rhyming name.
Buuuuuuuuddy.
In any sane country, wouldn’t that be called a cult compound?
What role do you think you would play in such a society?
Benevolent overlord, probably. Those communities are made up almost exclusively of benevolent overlords.
Oooh, a role playing game.
I’m a 10th level Vice President. Pass me the +1 backscratcher.
Hating libertarians when your entire philosophy is libertarian is ridiculous.
It sounds like the real problem she had with the Libertarian political movement was that she wasn’t in charge. The whole basis of the Libertarian philosophy is “I’m better than other people and so deserve more than them and would get it if I lived in a society where everyone recognized my greatness.” This doesn’t work too well if the other Libertarians are in turn saying they are better than you.
Hey, did you go to Hollywood Upstairs Philosophy College, too?
Take a look at Lockean or left-libertarianism and your view may change.
That said, any scenario that takes Glenn Beck out of normal society is A-OK by me. I hope they allow tours, it can be instructive for the kids!
