Or better yet, this.
Rand Rover could be eugenics and insurance coordinator. Course, given the inflated costs that come with insurance (Baumol’s cost sickness), they’d need to have someone set fiscal policy too. Maybe he could just rely on the eugenics side of things. Ever notice anyone save money for retirement in the Galt Gulch?
I think a quote from the Objectivist-influenced game Bioshock sums this “utopia” up pretty well:
“These sad saps. They come to Rapture thinking they’re gonna be captains of industry, but they all forget that somebody’s gotta scrub the toilets.”
What am I looking at ?
That’s no moon…
Probably a tax lawyer.
Which brings to mind a later quote:Who is the more foolish — the fool, or the fool who follows him?ETA: Just to make it clear, I’m referring not to Rhythmdvl, but anyone who might go along with Beck’s cockamamie scheme.
My mom’s in a Retirement Home with a lot of Far-Righties (founder of the local John Birch Society, former Heritage Foundation members, etc.). All richer than God, and most of them are huge Beckophiles. It does make me wonder…
(but with their medical issues, maybe that Prinicipity of New Utopia would’ve been a better fit…)
I wish these idiots would “Shrug” already and shut the fuck up about it. The sooner they sequester themselves, the better off everyone else will be. Shrug, you self-proclaimed Atlases. The only burden you carry is the limitless weight of your ignorance and stupidity.
^This.
The first 7 minute Beck video is basically promoting that people should be willing to walk into the place with the clothes on their back and the pennies in their pockets for the opportunity that is going to be there (translation: don’t all cults require you to turn over all your worldly goods to join?).
Beck specifically talks about how Tesla earned his first $20 in America by offering to fix a device for free, then once fixed, the owner gave him $20 that he wasn’t expecting. (translation: we’re going to need a lot of free labor to pull off our Disney Land).
I noticed the Idaho place will only RENT spaces in their community. So that they can enforce their HOA without the entanglements of actual real estate ownership. I plugged in some figures and it looked like it would cost me $2k/mo to live there. The only planned employment opportunities are at their gun manufacturing plant (hmm… anyone think that will end up like a US based Chinese sweat shop?). They claim to have 250 people qualified and signed up already. They don’t disclose how many of those are actually owners in the property.
I don’t understand all the condolences for Prince Lazarus in the floating Utopia opportunity. You’d think they would be expecting him back any day now?
I agree that I also can’t wait for them to start populating this place. I imagine that they will be signing some really strong Non-Disclosure Agreements, so we’ll probably have about a 5 year wait before the ex-cult members start going public about the internals of how the place really operates.
So are Perlstein’s two doorstopper-books, Before the Storm: Barry Goldwater and the Unmaking of the American Consensus, and Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America. The latter ends with the 1972 election, just before the Watergate story broke – I eagerly await the planned third volume in the series.
Jon Stewart just covered this on TDS. Apparently, Beck’s Libertopia is actually a going to be a monument to New Urbanism and communal lifestyle-micromanagement.
The cognitive dissonance . . . it burns . . .
New Urbanism? Does that mean Libertopia will resemble New York City?
They’re going to be libertarian commies?
No. The streets will be grass, apparently. Well, New Urbanism is distinctly not car-friendly. Presumably Independence Park will be build entirely pedestrian-scale – like Seaside (where the streets are at least paved).
Beck also remarked, in clips Jon Stewart played, that in the Independence Park “Marketplace” there will be no room for things like the Gap. And all the food will be produced locally. How granola-crunching anticorporate lefty can ya get?!
Again, apparently, actually. Stewart also played a clip where Beck talked about “breaking down class barriers,” though not enough of the clip to give any hint as to how.
Wait, think I already saw this movie. Philip Seymour Hoffman as Glenn Beck, right?
Perhaps he’s hoping they’ll diffuse into him if he gets close enough.
Hmm. I thought it was some sort of doomsday prepper paradise until I saw the photos. There is a faction of the nutty extreme right that are organizing and living in communes in preparation for the end of the world. Their whole life revolves around learning how to live ina post-apocalyptic world. But nope, Glen beck is even nuttier than THAT.
