Which, of course, makes Fear Itself’s point even more meaningless. Glenn Beck isn’t a racist based on that particular statement. I’m not sure how he/she can possibly make that leap in logic.

There are some comments here that say Glenn Beck is a bigot, racist, extreme right-wing etc. I’ve listened to him for 5 years and don’t think any of this is true. If you really listen to him (and not just read the web clips) he is very tongue-in-cheek in almost everything he says. Sure he takes a stand on conservative things, but he’s hardly a puppet for the President. He’s a funny guy, and uses political issues to make jokes. If they can do it on Mind of Mencia and get away with it, why can’t he?
So when he said he wanted to strangle Michael Moore to death with his own hands, he was just kidding around?

If you get to know him, probably yes. But I’m not going to defend everything someone says, I’m just pointing out that he is very sarcastic most of the time. I don’t think you should go around saying you want to strangle someone for real and haven’t heard the context of his statement, but knowing how he is it was probably in a dramatic, sarcastic manner. I seriously doubt he would strangle anyone. He himself says on his show you should listen for a while before judging whether you like him or not. When he started out in 2001 I couldn’t stand him AT ALL. But then after a few weeks I started to “get” him and realize his sarcastic sense of humor.

So it’s not “not entirely accurate,” it’s fucking wrong. Hollywood did indeed provide a platform for that stuff and it’s more than fair to criticize it for that, but the stuff had been popular for decades. Hollywood reflects popular sentiments most of the time, and once in a while (perhaps) it could be said to take a stand.

Glenn Beck is a bigot, all right, but that doesn’t mean that was the best possible quote to use as evidence of that. Out of context, it isn’t, in fact, a racist statement. David Cross could do that joke and it’d mean something else entirely. But this is a minor point, since Beck (I’d never heard of him before this thread, but I don’t think I’ll forget him now) has provided us with ample other soundbytes which do clearly demonstrate his lack of human decency.
