GMail tied in with Google - Big, Big Trouble??

How many of you use Gmail at work?

At work we were suddenly informed our Gmail login will also become a central Google, YouTube, and other related services login.

We were also warned the Terms of Service on our Employer’s Network applies equally to anything we do in this integrated youtube, google login.

Holy Freaking Shit

Think for a moment. Your entire online identity is right their in Google. Every damn thing you search. Every video you look at on Youtube. This effects my home pc too. I log into my work email several times a week.

The log out button in Gmail is gone. We can’t log out of this shit. Thank goodness ccleaner wipes out the cookie. I’ve setup cccleaner to run on my home pc every time it’s booted. That’s every single morning. Plus, I’m trying hard to run it manually any time I log into my email at work.

I’ve setup a new Youtube/Google log in that is connected to a hotmail email address. That’s what I sign into. But, anytime I sign into my work Gmail it screws it up. I have to run CCleaner and then log back in with my anonymous login.

I’ve basically lost my old youtube account. All my subscriptions everything because that account referenced my work email. Now that it’s all tied into Google there’s nothing more I can do except abandon it.

Forgot to mention.

I’m using my own DSL service at home. Paid for out of my pocket. But, anytime I login to my work gmail I’m suddenly logged into google as well. Talk about a violation of privacy. Plus, I’m held accountable by my work’s Terms of Service just like I’m using an office pc? WTF?

If Anyone knows a fix for this I’d love to hear it. I did finally find the log out button in Gmail. You have to click your username in the upper right corner. There’s a drop down menu and log out is there. Up until today, I had never logged out of Gmail. I always closed the Tab. But, that doesn’t get rid of this new Google log in.

You are joking ?
correct?

Gmail connected to google?

I wish I was joking. It became effective at my Job this past Saturday morning. There was a big, full screen banner page that popped up with I signed into my email.

My employer ran their own email server for over 25 years. First on a Vax VMS mainframe and then later on a pc server. Some Genius decided to convert all the email accounts to Gmail. Gmail has some kind of special program for Universities and I think other companies. You login to it from the company website just like we always did. It says it’s managed by my company. But, it’s Gmail. The Account settings screen confirms it’s Gmail.
It wasn’t a problem until this new universal login was setup with Google and YouTube.

OK to make this totally clear, G-mail does stand for Google mail, does it not? Web-based users like me log into through the google site. I guess it might not be obvious if you’re using a client program to access it.

I did a little experiment just now, I logged into Gmail, opened youtube and found that logged in. closed youtube, logged out of G-mail, opened a new tab for youtube. it was not logged in.

Even before I used Gmail, I assumed google knew a huge amout about me because of IP addresses and cookies etc.

That said, I am somewhat annoyed about the concept of linking up all these other sites.

Edit: I found out they were linked with youtube a while ago, I think when I created a youtube account earlier this year.

I’m not sure if all Gmail accounts are getting changed like this. That’s why I posted the thread. I wanted to see if other people using Gmail at work got changed like this.

here’s some info on Gmail for Universities. We got switched over to this a couple years ago (staff, faculty, and students)

This is why you shouldn’t be using the internet for personal uses at work.

I’m not worried about my pc at work.

I’m concerned about my PC at home using DSL that I pay for. Once in awhile I have to log into my work email from home. Without my consent, it’s logging me into Google/Youtube at the same time. Technically, we’ve been warned the Terms of Service for our Employers Network applies to that Google account. The one I didn’t give consent to logging into.

Presumably this will be happening to everyone at your company. Just have your HR folks clarify the policy. It’s probably intended that you not use those other services at work, so just don’t use them at work.

When I look at my Google Apps account, I can’t see what applications others have accessed. There’s no history. Of course I’m on the free account, so maybe paid accounts have audit trailing.

Is there some good reason why you do not have a seperate account for work and personal activities? I don’t get it- wouldn’t you log in to work when you are working, and not log into work when you are not?

IIf you just need to keep an eye on work emails, can you have them forwarded to some other account so you can monitor them without logging on to gmail?

You can log out of your gmail just click on your screenname in upper right and that submenu is still right there.

I have a personal google account and hotmail for home.

I do have to check work email from home. Get status of projects. Find out if any issues came up that I need to look at. I often go into work early if there’s a problem that I need to fix.

I’m going to try and set up Outlook to get my Gmail from work. By not using the web interface, maybe I won’t get logged into that work related google account. It’s worth a try.

I don’t think it’s actually doing that. I think it’s just that the three things use the same login cookie so if you log in to one, you’ll find that when you open one of the others, you don’t need to log in - but that doesn’t mean it’s actually doing anything with Youtube at the moment when you log into Gmail, just that if and when you visit Youtube after having logged into Gmail, you won’t have to log in again.

Use a different web browser on your home PC for your work E-mail vs everything else. I use Google Chrome on my home PC for Facebook and Google+ only, to keep those logins/cookies out of my other home web browsing, which I do via a Firefox-like browser (Pale Moon).

I have multiple gMail accounts, including one through my university, which switched their clunky old homebrew email over to gmail a few years ago (to much rejoicing), one under my old married name, one I use on gaming websites and one I use just for shopping. The accounts don’t cross-pollinate. As long as you log out with your personal account and log back in with your work account, the work account won’t see the stuff you do on your personal account. Yes, you will be logged into Youtube on your work account’s credentials - so don’t choose that moment to indulge your bestiality fantasies. Log out out of your work account and log back in on your personal account and work won’t know what you’re up to.

Google will know, of course, but they probably knew all about you before you did.

Just log out of your Google account when you’re done using it! Sheesh, it’s not that hard. If you hadn’t leapt up to run around yelling “The sky is falling, the sky is falling!” you might have found the sign out that pepperlandgirl mentioned. We’ve been using Gmail at work for ages and I log in from work, home, and sometimes, sadly, on vacation. Logging out takes one click.

What?! Just because your work uses gmail as their mail client doesn’t mean they are Google. They can’t go rooting around in your personal e-mail account just because you mentioned your work e-mail address in it. It doesn’t work that way. Unless I’m misreading your OP, you seem to be massively overreacting.

Maybe I have a limited view of these things because I have worked for large corporations since before email began to be used by businesses, but the most surprising thing about this thread for me has been the idea that a company is using Gmail for its business email. Is your work email address really yourname@gmail.com, not yourname@yourcompany.com?

And “We can’t log out of this shit!” isn’t just overreacting, it’s patently false.

That one surprised me a bit too.
