I’ve been swindled! As is my custom, I buy Coke from Mexico, at the local Spanish Bodega market. I like the taste of sodas which are sweetened with cane sugar-corn syrup is gross!
What did I read on the contents label? “Contains: High fructose corn syrup”.
That’s it, Coke of Mexico, you have lost me!:dubious:
They’ve been doing both for years. That’s why I laugh when people automatically assume Mexican Coke = “real” sugar.
That probably explains why I didn’t taste any difference in the Coke I had in Juarez a couple years ago.
Stay here in the U.S. and get yourself some Jones Soda.
It depends on which Mexican bottler it comes from. All the Mexican Coke i’ve seen here in San Diego is made with cane sugar. I believe that’s because the plant right across the border in Tijuana uses cane sugar.
The Coca-Cola company does what it can to discourage Mexican Coke imports, arguing that it infringes on the territory of American bottlers. Of course, the company has no legal recourse, so there’s not too much they can do. Here’s a story about it from a few years ago.
I’ve heard a theory that the whole New Coke-Classic Coke fiasco was orchestrated to disguise the changeover from cane sugar to cheaper corn syrup. Anybody else heard that?
Does Mexico still buy Cuban sugar?
I believe they were using HFCS well before this.
I’ve heard a theory that the New Coke was done on purpose, a inferior drink that was more Pepsi like, with the intention of bringing back Coke classic.
It’s false. I know one of the two gentlemen (the other is no longer alive) who were primarily responsible for New Coke. It was a genuine screw up that they were later able to capitalize on.
ETA: To answer your question, I’ve heard that theory before. However, I think it was on these boards.
I’ll second that. Target, of all places, carries those sodas.
They have good basic flavors, as well as some funky ones.
But if it says vanilla…it tastes like V A N I L L A!
no weak flavors, or some chemical that vaguely sorta taste like what the flavor is supposed to be.
try em, you won’t likely regret it.
I like Mexican coke when it has actual sugar. Hopefully Obama will let go of the Cuban embargo so we can have real sugar again.
The Cuban embargo has jack shit to do with this. Cuba doesn’t make all that much sugar - backwards economies tend to have that effect. I can go the the supermarket and buy tons of cane sugar that come from all over.
The problem is the corn lobby.
We have a winner.
Although we should stop the Cuban embargo.
Well, we also have a sugar lobby – it’s politically powerful here in Florida; I don’t know if it is anywhere else.
I think they may have a presence in Hawai’i…
I’ve never found any cane sugar Coca-Cola. I’ve checked out Mexican and kosher Coca-Cola, and the ingrediants list always said “sugar and/or high-fructose corn syrup”.
The midway St. Paul Cub and Rainbow both have them (no hfcs mentioned) in their international sections. I would assume that some of their locations in Minneapolis would as well. I rarely go to the big grocery stores, but when I do I always stock up.
I’ll have to look next time I go, but our big megalomart type place has (what I thought was) the cane sugar coke in the Mexican section in glass bottles.
My understanding is that Passover Coke contains sugar, even though the labeling may give list both ingredients.
I was under the impression that Mexcian Coke lists ingredients in much the same way, although I have seen Mexican Coke that has only “sugar” in its ingredient list.
edit: Here’s an interesting post about the Mexican Coke sugar/HFCS situation:
I think Canadian Coke says that too, but it still tastes better. Perhaps the relative amounts matters.
Every time I go to the States and have occasion to order a Coke, I’m always surprised by the taste. I shouldn’t be by now - I go to the USA 30, 40 times a year - but it gets me every time; I never expect it.
