In my opinion, the bigger issue here is the way that members of Congress—both Republicans and Democrats—subvert the spirit of the legislative process by slipping small amendments like this into large, complex bills, and hoping that they get by without being noticed. This sort of shit goes on all the time, and it allows the passage of many little pieces of legislation that would never pass if they were voted on as discrete items.

Heck, didn’t you know that all of Nantucket belongs to them?

A couple of years ago, the company I was working for sent a 30’ truck with crew to the Kennedy compound on Nantucket to do some work for the day.

:dubious: I’m not aware of a Kennedy compound on Nantucket. There is one in Hyannis, but that is on the mainland.

What i was saying here was that many of these surreptitiously-inserted amendments do, in fact, sneak past unnoticed and get enshrined in law—which is exactly what their sponsors wanted.

There’s actually a really good parody of this procedure on an episode of The Simpsons, where the family manages to attach an amendment to a larger bill while no-one is looking.

Quite correct. The Kennedy compound in Hyannis does front on Nantucket Sound, and someone anxious to, shall we say, trump up some such incident might well overlook such a small detail.

Or perhaps our friend confused Nantucket for Martha’s Vineyard, where Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis had a home known as Red Gate Farm? Spending time there, she and her family we can be sure conducted themselves as one might expect a Kennedy to behave:

Mrs. Onassis was widely liked and respected in Aquinnah as well as on the Vineyard as a whole, and two factors in particular contributed to the esteem in which she was held.

First, she jealously guarded the integrity of the delicately balanced environment in which her estate was set, frequently turning to Island wildlife experts and biologists for advice and assistance.

It appears that now the Kennedy-Schlossberg family intends to maintain those qualities of respect for the land and private dignity.

One hesitates to rely on the incident as related, given the factual inaccuracies in which it’s embedded.

For anyone interested in the Chappaquiddick affair, I found the book “Chappaquiddick: The Real Story” by James E. T. Lange and Katherine, Jr. Dewitt to be very rational, unemotional, balanced and informative.
