I decided to recapture a bit of my childhood magic and rent some Voltron. How I loved to watch that show as a child. After viewing it as an adult, however, I’ve realized something: My child-self was an idiot. That show sucked!
It did! The plots were moronic, the space mice were annoying, and what’s with all the damn praying? I don’t remember that! Is there a special Mass of the Blessed Robot lion that they didn’t teach us in Catholic School?
I’ve gone back and watched it, and although it did loose some spark for me, a lot of that spark was still there. I loved the nostalgia. I think my favorite was always the green lion for some reason.
The lions had nothing to do with it. Honest.
Form feet and legs!.. Form arms and body! And I’ll form…the head!
I know how you feel. Awhile back I bought the entire Transformers G1 series on DVD. Four seasons spanning over 9 DVD’s. I don’t know if I was just stupid when I was younger or if the show was never really top notch but it did not age well. My son loved it though. He has seen every iteration of Transformers except for G1. So I guess it wasn’t a total waste of money.
Man, I loved Voltron when I was a kid, and used to have the Castle of Lions movie on tape, but idiotically taped over it with Power Rangers. What the hell was I thinking? But I don’t remember any praying, and that would probably annoy me if I watched it again.
Although my fondness for Voltron probably contributed to my enjoyment of my favorite Perry Bible Fellowship strip.
Voltron! I loved it! I had all the cat-car figures that would link together into the robot. Of course I glommed onto the girl character in the blue car and would basically only play with that one. I still think those toys are downstairs in the basement somewhere.
I definitely don’t remember the prayer, though! And, since I turned out as a rather staunch church-spurner, I’d be inclined to discount the idea that it had any appreciable effect. That being said, I also watched Captain Planet, and I only recycle sporadically. I guess it goes both ways!
Just out of curiousity, was Voltron’s plot “adapted” for the US market, a la Battle of the Planets? If it was, it might be more watchable to see what the original had been.
As a kid, I loved Voltron for one reason: it ENDED! I mean really, the plot didn’t go on forever, they actually brought things to a close and that was it. It impressed me when I was a kid.
