Gobear plays Sandy Dennis in "The Out-of-Towners"--NYC travel advice requested

The Goboyfriend and I are going to be in NYC April 10-12 and we wonder what the fun things are in town are. We have tickets for Rent on the 10th and then we want to spend the 11th and 12th sightseeing. We’d be grateful for any advice, especially on moderately priced restaurants and places to stay.

I highly recommend the Algonquin—centrally located, not too expensive and you can’t beat the history.

Plus, I would love to have after-work drinks with you and *Goboyfriend in the Blue Bar!

Damn. So I can’t code . . . At least I’m chic and stylish . . .

That would be swell!

(Sandy Dennis Hat/on) OH MY GOD, WE’RE BEING KIDNAPPED… (Sandy Dennis Hat/off)

I’ve never been to New York, but I would think the U.N. would be a hoppin’ spot right about now.

Seriously, I’ve heard the museums are the bee’s knees.

Absolutely, and there’s a Matisse/Picasso show right now I’d love to go see, but the Goboyfriend hates museums with a passion. Art bores him, despite numerous attempts to introduce it to him. He has at least learned to like musical theater to some extent–before he met me he had never been to a play of any kind.

My fav NYC hotel - The SOHO Grand. I also recommend the Algonquin - I’ve stayed there, hosted corporate events there, etc.

Do not forget to take a walk through Central Park.

How do you feel about live music? Favorite genres? NYC is a great live music town.

Thanmks for the hotel suggestions. We decided to go with the New York Helmsley on 42nd because it had the most amenities with the best price for air/hotel package.

I love live music (especially folk/Celtic), but the Goboyfriend is less enthusiastic, unless it’s gay disco divas. I also want to expand his culinary horizons, so I’d like to take him to a decent Jamaican restaurant for some jerk pork or maybe some cuisine he has never tried (which is most of them. Lord knows I adore my baby, but he can be really resistant to anything outside the boundaries of Betty Crocker land.) Any ideas?

Are you shitting me? What kind of homo IS he?

You give preference to Leona Helmsley over Dorothy Parker?!

Well, he worships Madonna, so that’s one of the Seven Deadly Warning Signs. OTOH, he has stated over and over again that he does not care for Sondheim, no matter how often I play Sweeney Todd or Company. (OF course, I knew better than to try Follies or Merrily We Roll Along on him. One must walk before one can fly*.)

I’m getting excited about this trip

Eve and any other interested Dopers: Having drinks in the Blue Bar at the Algonquin sounds wonderful. Would after work on Friday do? You name the time.

Madonna, huh? Well, thank jod…there’s still hope.

Friday the 11th? Around 5:30? We should keep it to a small group, though—no more than six—as the Algonquin is not a huge Dopefest kinda joint. We might have to go to the lobby and haul a few chairs together, as the Blue Bar will probably be packed on a Friday night. Don’t suppose you’ll be in town early enough for a nooner?

We get into Laguardia at 11:15 on Thursday, so that’s not going to work, what with getting out of the airport, grabbing a cab, and checking into the hotel. Looks like it would have to be noon on Friday or 5:30 Thursday evening. The show doesn’t start until 8, so we’d have time for a Cosmopolitan or two.

Gobear, check yer e-mail.

How about lunchtime-ish on Friday, for tea/drinks? It’ll be packed Friday after work, but we’ll be able to get together half-a-dozen seats at noon or one on a Friday.

That would be sensational.

Swell, darling, we’re on!

We’ll be there with bells on. Any good restaurant recommendations in Mid-town Manhattan I can take the Goboyfriend to?

Well, you’re not vegitarians are you?

Try McHale’s on the corner of 8th and 47th. Dive bar with the BEST food in the city.
