Witch, your children will learn what their teachers present to them. You have no say in whether your children learn about evolution, or algebra, other religions, or the fact that gay people exist – all valid things for kids to learn in school (probably high school).

I am thankfully out of high school, but have several younger siblings and friends. Everyone single of one of my gay (or feminine looking) friends was horribly picked on. The only one who wasn’t, was my girlfriend and that is because she taught martial arts, and quickly showed the football team that she could kick their ass.
But, my friends have had people spit on them, slash their tires, egg their homes, write derogatory comments on their lockers, beaten with baseball bats, etc.
I even had a friend commit suicide because of the teasing he endured at school. I seriously think stricter rules and better progams could have saved his life. After his death, another friend told me that several students made very derogatory marks, to the extent of “faggots are better off dead”.
I’ve also experienced prejudice. Most of it has just been in the form of hateful looks, but I’ve had people come up to me and say things like “you are going to hell.” For a long time, I actually believed it and I became very depressed and suicidal. Thankfully, I was able to make friends who were accepting of me for who I really was. I was even able to tell some of my siblings.
I just want people to say “it is okay to be gay.” and for them to acknowledge the homosexality of several men who have contributed greatly to our society. It is a shame that when we hear about the holocaust, everyone cares about the jews, but so few realize how much more difficult it was to be homosexual.

Yes, there IS an element that will only allow speech that agrees with THEIR position - and it exists on the left/liberal as well as the right/conservative side of things.
I don’t see any whining in this thread; at least, not on this side of the argument. My post explained exactly why it is we have the positions we do. This is life or death; more specifically, it’s the life and death of my friends. It is not whining.
Gobear, never put faith in a fundamentalist. They will stab you in the back, kick you when you fall, beat you over the head, and leave broken and bloody. Because that’s what their “god” tells them to do.

Anyone who is against a program that could save the life of a troubled gay teen by spreading the TRUTH that there’s nothing wrong with being gay, that its not something you choose, and that its no reason to destroy yourself, is worse than a bigot. As far as I’m concerned, they’re the accomplice to every death of every gay teen the silence they worship causes.

That is not what I said–I accused the Catholic Church, the hierarchy of supporting it, which has been amply borne out by mountains of evidence. She has consistently posed the topic of teaching tolerance in school as having politics and ideology forced on her and her children. She does not want her kids to hear a message of getting along with gay people–pretty much says it all to me.
