Godfather geography question

I do not live anywhere near NYC so please help.

In the Godfather Movies where does the old Don live? He has plenty of acres and they talk about going into the city. And Sonny gets killed on the causeway. So the causeway connects, what?

Is it Long Island or New Jersey or where?

And where is the area where Pauly gets killed? My favorite line by the way. “Leave the gun, take the cannoli.”

Thanks for your help.

The Corleone’s live in Long Island, and, fyi, the complex is collectively called “the mall.” Sonny got killed on the Long Island Causeway going from the mall to Carlo’s house in Brooklyn.

IIRC, the Long Island Causeway connects with I-95 south which becomes the New Jersey Turnpike if you travel south long enough (Hell, it becomes Miami if you travel south long enough, but that’s beyond the scope of this post. ). If I were at home, I’d look in a map and give you the directions, but that’s the general idea.

As to where Paulie was killed, I don’t know the exact location, but I seem to remember the book saying that they were on the NJ Turnpike.

I happen to have been rereading parts of the book on the can this very morning. It doesn’t specify exactly where Paulie was shot, but they were on their way from the city (Washington Heights section) back to the Mall (Long Beach); they were near Long Beach during the shoting. I happen to live in New York, but I don’t drive so I don’t know the roads very well. I don’t think they’d have any reason to be on the NJ Turnpike, but I may well be wrong.

I highly recommend the book to anyone who enjoyed the movie, but you might be disappointed to know, Stella, that your favorite line does not appear (I was disappointed).

Thanks so much. I like the movies so much that these bits interest me very much.

VarlosZ- Can you really get around with out driving in NYC? What if you want to go out of the city? I am so dependant on my car that I find it hard to imagine. But then I live 18 miles from the nearest grocery store.

We rent cars here for the occasional road trip. And take public transportation and cabs the rest of the time. Works pretty well. Much of Manhattan is no more than a few blocks at most from some grocery, supermarket, etc.

To my knowledge there is only one “causeway” in the NYC metro area. It’s the Robert Moses Causeway (I suspect it may have been given the “Robert Moses” designation well after it was built) that connects the Atlantic shore of Long Island proper and the barrier island that contains Jones Beach. The northern end of the Causeway touches down near Brightwaters, LI about 50 miles from Manhattan.

According to the book, the Corleone compound was in Jones Beach.

I have always had the impression, without any real foundation, that the New York Dons lived on Long Island and the soldiers lived in Jersey.

The Robert Moses Causeway runs along the south shore of Long Island. I believe Sonny was killed at the Jones Beach toll booth. The causeway does not connect with I-95. Nothing on Long Island, Queens or Brooklyn connects directly with New Jersey; one has to go through Manhattan, Staten Island or the Bronx (only 99% sure on that last statement).
