GoFundMe for Former SDMB mod @Idle_Thoughts; he needs some help after some personal challenges

I’m Facebook friends with Former SDMB mod @Idle_Thoughts, also known as Chris N, and he has been going through some tragedies and challenges recently. Most notably, his mother died unexpectedly in a car accident, and this disrupted his disability income. He’s working to get it restored, but in the mean time needs some help to pay rent and buy groceries. I’ve set up this GoFundMe, link below, for him; the money will go to me and I will send it to him electronically. He and I would both really appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks very much.

Glad to help out. That’s a tough spot to be in. So sorry about his mom’s sudden death. :worried:

I know something of Idle_Thought’s situation, as we are friends on FB. He asked for a very modest amount – but not enough to cover his rent. As I type this, the amount raised will just cover his rent. After his mother was killed, he was able to make himself his own payee for his disability checks. But there was a government SNAFU. Someone entered a zero instead of a one (or a one instead of a zero). He’s counting on SSA to correct the error before his rent is due. It probably will be, but… what if it isn’t? I’m glad that iiandyiiii set up the GoFundMe, and that the donations have exceeded Idle_Thought’s ask. He shouldn’t be booted to the curb just because his mother died. (And kudos to the anonymous donor who covered half of the initial ask.)

I wish I could.
How wonderful a community this is to help one of our own.

20 years ago, I was unemployed and I got food poisoning after eating some salsa that was a bit too old. Dopers secretly did a whip-around and gave me money for groceries. This truly is an awesome community.

Thanks for setting this up, Andy. Looks like we’re doing well by him. I hope it brings him some comfort and joy.

Do you know what state he lives in? If he’s having problems with SSA, I may be able to put him in touch with casework staff at a Congressional office that may be able to help.

You did. A little while ago I made a second donation because you can’t, so you donated through me.

Donation made. I don’t know Idle Thoughts well, but I definitely remember him, and I’m glad i can help a bit.

The GoFundMe says that he lives in Arizona.

Oh my. That is awesome.:green_heart:

Roger that. I don’t have personal contacts in those offices, but I would highly recommend that Idle Thoughts contact his U.S. Senators and Representative for assistance. These offices have casework staff specifically trained to assist constituents having problems with federal agencies, and SSA is one of the most common areas where they are asked to assist.

Doing some quick research, Senator Krysten Sinema’s website says she is no longer accepting casework “due to the upcoming end of her term.” She’s a real piece of crap. However, Senator Mark Kelly has a casework website. They give a phone number to their Phoenix office for urgent requests (which I’d say this qualifies). Also, he should contact his U.S. Representative. The House of Representatives has a “Find my Representative” website in case he doesn’t know offhand.

Anyone in contact with him please pass this information on to him if it might be helpful.

I C&P’d your 2nd paragraph on the FB Messages.

It certainly is !!

I dropped some in the pot.

This has been a huge success, Chris is overwhelmed with gratitude. Thanks so much to everyone!

Yay!

Be sure and leave it up for a while. Some of us get a financial boost around the end/beginning of the month and we may want to share (again). I want him to have enough for peace of mind to bridge the gap until he get the other problem fixed. He shouldn’t have worry about this in the immediate stages of grief after losing his mom.

Donated! I don’t usually do GoFundMe, but for a fellow SDer I will gladly make an exception.

How did this speck of dust get in my eye??

(BTW, your absence from the MMP has been noticed. :blue_heart: )

I’m FB friends too, and if the info is current then it’s Phoenix AZ.

I think that’s alright to share here. Isn’t it?
