So I was hangin’ at the Hard Rock last night, satisfying a need to be out of the freakin’ hotel room, and they played this video. The song was “Going Down” and the players appeared to be Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani and someone playing a 335. My questions:
Who was that 3rd player (and am I right about the first 2)?
Are you sure it was Jeff Beck? He does play the song with Freddie King, but it’s also done by Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Eric Johnson (who plays a 335) on the G3 tour.
I saw Jeff Beck in the Berkeley Amplitheater circa 1982. It was a ripping show. Jeff Beck came back out of a “real” encore (at least it seemed like a real encore instead of a planned break before the last song).
He played a ripping version of Going Down. Man did it rock. When he finished, Jeff used both thumbs to break his bottom two guitar strings, then the middle two strings, then the top two strings. That was the end of the show.
I think Beck has a version of Going Down on the albumn Beckola
Well, duh, I checked at Amazon. Clearly what I saw was some version of “G3” (Satriani touring with other monster players). There’s no songlist for G3 - Live in Concert (1996) so that may be the one. I’ll search further…
You can certainly get it on DVD. Go get it now if just to see Stevie’s “Attitude Song” the tune that made me buy my first locking-whammy geetar. It was proving a bit tricky to play on a Tele
I’m off to the Albert Hall later this month to see Satch, Stevie and Robert Fripp on this years G3. I know what to expect from the first two any one know what sort of show Uncle Robert puts on?
