Going to a bar alone?

This is one of the benefits of a VFW membership - not only do I use it at my excellent local VFW canteen, it gets me into VFWs around the country.

These are generally low-key and friendly places, with cheaper drinks. Just what I need as a general rule.

Another not a big drinker here, but it really is nothing to be afraid of. Your demeanor will set the tone for all but the most socially inept other patrons. Take a seat, say hello to the bartender and order. Give off a friendly but don’t try and pick me up vibe.

I would recommend a bar that is relatively quiet and upscale or fun and crowded. You want to either be able to sit or sort of blend into the crowd and interact with them. It feels really weird when I’m at a bar by myself and there are just enough people there that I can’t sit down. Less crowded is probably better though. People are more inclined to strike up conversations if there are other groups of ones and twos.

You probably want to pace yourself and drink water between alchoholic drinks. Since it’s just you, you might be inclined to drink faster than normal out of bordom or lack of distractions.

I like to have them hold my calls as well. And no interviews.

I would not suggest getting smashed without knowing the bar and its surrounding areas well first. Of course, getting smashed while drinking alone at a bar is probably a stupid idea regardless. Getting that smashed in any case can be bad for your health, for that matter. Not that it stops me >_>

Just be smart, and you’ll be fine. Have fun. Some bars have super awesome atmospheres that are perfect for book-reading or the occassional serendipitous chat.

Used to love that bar… I’m going to date myself, but is the Holy City Zoo still up the street?
