Later in the month, I am going to OH to visit my mom, with my boyfriend. Anyone know of things to do? I tried looking up some stuff but nothing around this time of year. I just don’t want to sit around watching TV when I only see my mom twice a year.
I live in Ohio but not Cinci, but have been there. I toured some places of interest around there some years ago. If you like historic sites, Taft’s birthplace is an interesting site.

Did not check seasonal hours but U.S. Grant’s birth home in Point Pleasant, not too far away is nice to see, across the highway by the park is the beautiful Ohio River.
His boyhood home until he left for West Point at age 17 is tourable, in Georgetown.
William Henry Harrison is buried in Noth Bend, about 15 miles west of Cinci., on Mt. Nebo.
I did not check my Ohio Almanac for points of interest, just had these in my head.
It’s pricey but totally worth going downtown to have a drink at Orchids at Palm Court. The building is an art deco masterpiece–the photos don’t do it justice.
If you like beer, check out my friends at Hoperatives for beer-related happenings.
Immediately across the river from Cinci is Newport KY. Newport at the Levee is entertaining, and there is also the Newport Aquarium, which is really cool. (My husband is from Cinci.)
For shopping entertainment, there is an IKEA, a Trader Joe’s, and Jungle Jim’s among other things. Jungle Jim’s in particular is worth seeing once.

A third for Jungle Jim’s. That place is spectacular. The imported foods section alone is bigger than most grocery stores.
I’m an aging Cincinnati hipster and former man about town.
What kind of stuff are you and the boyfriend in to, and what weekend will you be here?
Our local free weekly is as good a place as any to check out the local events and music calendar.
These are all great place to start. I’d also add seeing a production at Playhouse in the Park, as well as just making time to stroll around Mt Adams, grab a drink in one of the various bars/pubs or eat at any of the cool restaurants up there (I’m partial to Daveed’s since I used to work there). Its like a miniature San Francisco there.
Also, see if you can try: Graeter’s ice cream (black raspberry chip!), Skyline chili, goetta for breakfast, La Rosa’s pizza, have a honking stein of kickass bier at the Hofbrauhaus in Newport if you go to the levee, and if you do find yourselves in Newport KY across the river, check out a little pllace on Monmouth Street called La Mexicana. Their authentic Mexican food is the best in the tri state area, especially their goat-meat taco birrias. Damn they are good.
Another great restuarant to try is the Senate, which opened not too long ago in Over The Rhine, an old, gentrified historic part of downtown that’s recently been reclaimed from urban decay.
Also if you like beer, check out the Hofbräuhaus over in Newport. I try to get there whenever I’m in town. (Too bad you’re not going when the weather’s warmer; the outdoor Biergarten is a blast!)
You might also stop by Arnold’s Bar & Grill, a cool old pub that claims to be the oldest bar in Cincinnati.
Why yes, I do like to drink. How did you know?
why don’t you tell us the kind of stuff you like to first. There are all kinds of restaurants in Cincinnati to choose from so we could narrow it down some based on what you want. For instance, if you want ambiance there is Montgomery’s on the Ohio side of the river and there’s a nice restaurant at the old airport (Lunken). The Kentucky side has a lot of different places to eat along the river.
As far as museums go the AF Museum in Dayton is rather large so you’re not going to see it all in an afternoon. The old train station in Cincinnati is now a museum and makes a nice day trip. It’s a beautiful Art Deco building unto itself.
And the Omnimax theater is pretty cool too. I especially like the fact that what they show there tends towards the educational and the films are just under an hour, leaving you with plenty to do in the rest of the museum.
Jeez…I never realized how many Cincy Dopers we have. I’ve been feeling like the lone Bengals champion over in the Game Room forum. Any of you guys/gals still live in the area now? I do.
