Y’all are referencing this, but I don’t know what you are talking about. Clue me in?
It’s mis-cited. We are referring to phouka’s post, not yours.
Yes, I’m quibbling…
Very true! I had forgotten that’s a different county out there.
Most would say there’s not much to it, but in fact the converted desert feeds a lot of people – pretty ingeiously, I might add.
True, but the travelers and tourists generally recognize the INS/Border Patrol Checkpoint as the line between San Diego and Orange Counties, and that’s in Oceanside. [There’s also its inland counterpart on the I-15 between Riverside and San Diego, but I can’t remember if it’s in Fallbrook, Rainbow, or Temecula. Bonsall? In any case, I think the checkpoint is actually farther north than the I-5 version.]
I’d have to correct you on that. It’s one of those trivia bits from my high school history and civics classes that I actually paid attention to: Border Field State Park may be farther south, and on the border (hence the name), but Point Loma is farther west. And I’ve stood on the block of cement that used to have the AA gun; it faces west to defend against Japanese Zeros. Meanwhile the sub base is on the east side of the peninsula. The tourist center is on the tip and affords a view East, South, and West (and sorta Northeast and Northwest if you’re working at it).
Comparable trivia for geography buffs: Which is farther west, Reno Nevada or San Diego, California? OR Which is farther east, the Capital of Brazil or the Capital of the USA?
Oh and my apologies to Phouka and Czarcasm for the misattributions.

I don’t know why you’re quibbling about all this other stuff – Point Loma’s significance is that it is the location of the high school from which I graduated.
Technically it’s in Rainbow, but right on the border with Temecula, and it is.
Good point! I think there’s still a plaque there, or a statue?
Actually, I was feeling a bit bad about being so persnickety, but thanks to that (and Grestarian, I’ve learned some things about my home town.
It does make sense that there would be anti-aircraft guns on Point Loma. After Pearl Harbor, especially, they would have wanted extra protection for the naval base. I was thinking of the big cannons which you can still see vestiges of in San Francisco. Those were to blow up armadas trying to enter the bay. Still, different situations, different tactics.
I also checked into the southwest thing. Using Google maps, I took a bearing of 315 degrees from the southwest corner of Imperial Beach and found (if I have the theory right) that it is more southwest than Point Loma (yea), but not as southwest as a good part of the coast north of Malibu including most of Oxnard and all of Santa Barbara (boo). Also, we both forgot the Channel Islands. It looks like the southwesternmost point in the continental U.S. is on San Nicolas island.
Hmmm. We might want to skip Point Loma until they get their dead whale thing figured out. I sure hope they don’t dynamite it.
Reno.
Maybe.
My husband pulled this one on me once. I can’t remember if I got it right or not.
Oh, yeah. Definitely Reno, because of the way California bends to the the southeast. Reno’s even west of Los Angeles.
Czarcasm, I looked up where your hotel is, and you’ll be close to the SD Trolley Orange Line. Using the trolley and small bits of shoe leather, you could get to Old Town, Seaport Village, the Gaslamp District, Petco Park (the Padres stadium), and even the Tijuana border. You’d need to get on a bus to get to Balboa Park/SD Zoo, Sea World, or Coronado. You’d probably want a ride to get to Point Loma, Wild Animal Park (Zoo Safari Park to tourists), or to the Stone Brewery.
twickster, so are you joining us next July?
I haven’t been to SD since my father died in '88. I’m guessing one or two things have changed in that time.
Let’s see, there’s still sun and surf. The weather’s nice, and the Chargers suck. I’d say it’s more or less the same as it was 1988. Well, the sprawl is sprawlier of course, but the economy is slowing that down. Come on and visit!
I also remembered that the Del Mar races will be running during the week that Czarcasm is here, so there’s another possible activity.
That time of year is also great if you want to go wading with the leopard sharks at La Jolla Shores.
Re: Tijuana-haven’t got a current passport, so maybe I’ll skip crossing the border into the next time I come down. You still have to decide when and where to meet up with the both of us. Is there anywhere in Balboa Park that would be good for a group meet?
There’s an amphitheater with a pipe organ that shouldn’t be hard to miss.
Yeah, but they don’t serve beer there. How about The Yard House near Horton Plaza?
The munu looks good to me, and they seem to have a nice selection of ciders(a favorite of Rahne’s).
San Diego, you say? July, you say? Hmmm…
Esprix
Rahne wants to know if the Go San Diego Card is worth it. We were thinking of getting a couple of 3 day passes. Also, are they on sale often, or is the deal they are offering a rare thing?
Also, whats the cheapest way to get from San Diego to L.A.? If we get the abovementioned card there a two or three Hollywood-centric things we’d like to try.
Well, unless someone has something contrary to say about them, we’re putting in our order for a couple of the Go Cards tomorrow.
