The new series, Golden Boy, starts on CBS on Tuesday. However, you can already see it on the Internet or On Demand.
The basic premise is that Golden Boy is a guy who started off as a beat cop and very, very quickly rose through the ranks to become the youngest police commissioner - simply because he is, well, “Golden Boy” and seems to be in the right place (for him) at the right time (for him) and do the right thing (for him).
The pilot episode is kind of interesting…I think we all know someone like Golden Boy…sort of that person who by sheer luck, dumb luck, conniving luck seems to always be in the position to come out smelling like the proverbial rose, even if he has to step over some dead bodies, stab someone in the back or simply lie to get where he is.
Not sure where this series is going - will we grow to like him? Will we grow to hate him? Will we want him to succeed or get his comeuppance?
I admit I don’t pay much attention to ads, but I had seen so many ads for it that I thought I understood the premise — a young college kid learning to be a detective under the reluctant guidance of a crusty veteran. I intended to watch the pilot and give it a chance.
Now that you’ve told me that he’s actually the commissioner, I kind of doubt I’ll watch it. Between the last two new shows I’m desperately trying to like — The Americans and The Following — my belief suspenders are already overstretched.
Whoa! Slow down…we learn he is the commissioner, HOWEVER, that is the first 30 seconds and the last 30 seconds of the pilot episode! The rest is exactly what you are looking for - how Golden Boy got to this position. I have no idea if we will actually see him as the commissioner in this series…maybe it is all leading up to how he got there, but so far - we ain’t seem him do anything as commissioner.
I’m somewhat tempted just because it’s got Chi McBride. But I hate cop shows.
Also, the promos just make me feel OOOOOLD…it’s obvious that we’re supposed to swoon over the actor because he’s so hot and sexy. But the only thing that keeps going through my mind is “When did they start letting 15-year-olds on the police force?”
Well, the show is titled “Golden Boy” not “Golden Oldie”.
And the point is that he is not only one lucky sonofabitch, but also hot and cute and sexy, which is why most everybody on the force already hates him from the get-go - at least in the first episode. There does seem to be some redemption in at least one circumstance/working relationship, so maybe things are going in a different direction in upcoming shows?
I’m still watching it. Owen’s look of amazement when Clark didn’t take credit for closing the case bought it another week, and made up for the obligatory ADA who looks like a 19-year-old supermodel.
It’s kind of a weird setup, though. The second episode ended with a cliffhanger, with Arroyo taping Natasha’s last exchange with Clark to presumably torpedo his career, which was interesting — but then five seconds later, we’re reminded that he made commissioner in 7 years, so obviously, no damage was done.
I think this show, in its premise at least, has some potential; like The Shield it’s less about destination that it is about journey.
The “set-up” I’m taking away from the promos and the premiere is that yes, he made commish in 7 years, but it was 40 miles of bad road to get there, and now that he is there, it’s not all it was made to be, or that the price may have been to high, or he burned too many people to get there and isn’t trusted or is considered a joke.
I am liking this show a lot! And I typically don’t watch cop shows. Well, other than Justified. I caught the pilot ep of GB and have been hooked since. I like the Arroyo character, seemed like a complete bastard and may well be but they gave him some more depth with each episode.
What did GB say to the hot woman detective before he passed out last night? I didn’t catch it.
He said, “Arroyo doesn’t deserve you,” which was something he should not have said, because he wasn’t supposed to know they were romantically involved. I guess it could mean he doesn’t deserve her as a partner in the squad, but the look on her face showed that she did not take it that way.
Too bad, because it looked like Clark and hottie were becoming friends, but now she’ll ask Arroyo about it, and he’ll tell her that Clark has threatened to expose them. I think Clark was bluffing, precisely because he wouldn’t want to hurt her, but she may not think so, and it will destroy her trust in him.
And just by the way, I thought Arroyo’s wife was hotter than the blonde.
I’m enjoying the show so far. He’s just enough of a punk to make mistakes but sympathetic enough to want to see how he gets there.
It’s clear things weren’t a smooth ride. As Commissioner, he walks with a limp and they imply that McBride’s character died.
I want to kick Arroyo for being a dick.
Last night, he said:
Something like “You’re too good for Arroyo.” In other words, he drunkenly let her know that he knows about them, even though he wasn’t supposed to say anything to anyone. Now she knows he knows her secret.
So, he broke his end of the bargain with Arroyo already. I mean, it wasn’t like Detective Hotness didn’t know about the affair she was in but GB has shown he has loose lips when he drinks. IF she lets Arroyo know what was said.
Now knowing what he said I wonder if she was already feeling Arroyo didn’t deserve her and feeling a spark for GB. Would definitely set up another thing for them to clash over.
I know Arroyo’s son has shown up as a rookie cop in Futureworld, has there been any clue as to what has become of Arroyo?
It suggests Arroyo is still around, since his son said that his father told him they used to work together. They way he said it sounded present tense, not old news.
Golden Boy was not on the list of shows that CBS says it will renew.
Too bad, it’s now the only show on the big networks that I watch right away. I DVR a couple more, but most of my viewing is now on the cable stations.
I guess it will join Journeyman, New Amsterdam, Life, Human Target, and several other shows that got cancelled almost as soon as I discovered I liked them.
